using the trailer battery?

Help me out here:

Normal Casita wiring has both the tow vehicle and the trailer battery being charged by the altenator.

If the altenator quits (and you don't notice the red light), the car runs until its battery is run down. In the absence of an isolator or diode between the altenator and the trailer battery, the trailer battery is also going to run down along with the car battery.:cry

If you've disconnected the trailer battery to restart the tow vehicle you've probably just allowed time for the battery(ies) to recover enough to start the engine, but without a working altenator, you won't go far with two weak batteries.

Now if your trailer battery was fully charged, not connected or, in use, it'd be great for emergencies.

What am I missing?!:chin

murphy's law I guess

Sorry to hear about your recent tribulations. :cry

I'm new to the board, with a question posed on another thread regarding tow vehicles. One of my considerations is a 1989 Vandura V8 (350 engine). I believe your model may be a V6, but just the same, despite your recent problems, has the van been good to you?

Towing with a Vandura

To Lenny,
Our tow vehicle is a 1991 2500 Vandura with the large V8 engine.
We have had nothing but great success with this vehicle. It tows the Casita as if it weren't there. Do not know why the alternator failed on that one trip. We had no trouble before or after. It's a mechanical thing, you know. Good luck with your van.

to Darline

Thanks for the reply - I guess, all vehicles break down no matter how reliable. Just curious, do you have the roof conversion type and if so, what is your height clearance?

2500 Vandura

Hi Lenny,
We do not have the high top, therefore we can park the van in our
carport. Did I mention before, :wave we love our van?
