Tracing a leak

I am thinking of using food colouring in water to spray the outside of the 4500 where there is a bad leak. Hopefully it will seep through and reveal the path the water is taking.
Please tell me that I will be able to clean it all up, inside and out, when I am finished. Or is this another one of those really bad ideas that I am know for???

Thanks in advance.... Scouter Dave

I would be inclined to test your food color to see if it will make a permanent stain.

....on another note, this dye technique is often used when looking for leaks in an air conditioning system. They use a dye that can only be seen using a black light and goggles. I wonder if these dyes would be useful in this application. Here is a kit that comes up on amazon:

It appears that items within the kit are also available separately.
