Trailer recomendation

I own a Subaru Outback sport and would like to get a small travel trailer for my wife and I. We really would like to have at least a toilet and a/c (we get a lot of 90/90 days 90% humidity and 90 degrees). Subaru says it can handle 2000lbs with a tongue weight of 200 lbs.

I've towed with our Chevey Suburban a 31 foot 5700 lb Airstream but it is a little much for just the two of us. Four if you want to count our 2 greyhounds :).

I'm also 6-4 so, the heigher the ceiling the better.

Does it really only weigh 1500 lbs? Or is that the base weight before options? Was the rear air an option from Casita?

we had a discussion about Subarus a while back. Not sure if it answers your questions or not, but you might check.

some one with a Casita will have to answer that other part, but I think thats the empty weight with out appliances.

If your thinking about towing with the Outback your outOluck ':bh' with the Casita 16' Deluxe it weighs in at 2600+# loaded.

Even the 13'deluxe would be over the limit of the Outback. ':o'

Now on the other hand the Suburben would be the rig to tow with. It will tow a 17' Deluxe like it wasn't back there. ':banana'

I believe Casita's very conservative rating for a standard 16 is about 1850 lbs before options and gear

Bob, the older Casitas with air had it installed in the rear window like this one. Also, the older Casitas were apparently quite a bit lighter than the newer ones, however he's upgraded the fridge and wheels and other things, so I really can't say if his weight is an accurate estimate. (Only way to tell is to weigh it.)

Also, notice it has a side bench instead of side dinette (a little unusual, although not a bad set up).

Bob, Mary is correct that the older units are a little lighter. However, I'm afraid it is way to close for your Suburu. Mine weighed out at 2080 (fairly well loaded) even though the title says 1600. Tongue weight with the rear air is a real challenge (too light). Any extras that I have are carried forward (i.e., drinking water) in either the closet or the bathroom in order to increase the tongue weight. The tongue weight will be over the limit for you.

I love my '89 and it tows like a dream behind my straight 6. Just like nothing is there. However, it is a mid size SUV so it is set up for towing over 5,000 lbs. I know the 13' Bolers and some of the others weigh in around 1,000 lbs so that is probably what you should consider if you want to tow with the Outback.

Two greyhounds? You may exceed the GVW of the Subaru with them alone. Your Subaru Outback is rated to tow 2000 pounds but more importantly, Subaru rates it Class I. As I recall, Casita recommends Class II or III for all models.

Howdy...just as a matter of interest: My 74-13 ft. Boler, without a furnace or spare tire , in travel mode with our clothes in the tow vehicle, tips the scales at 1464 Lbs. Benny

You might have to break down and buy a new Trillium Outback for your Outback, It's rated at 1100 lbs.
My original Trillium- 1977 1300 weighed 1090 lbs with fridge, stove and furnace.

Well I sent an e-mail to Casita and here is the reply:
"That model probably weighs around 1800 lbs, You can't be sure exactly w/out having the trailer weighed @ a weigh station. A 2003 16' deluxe model dry weight is 2,065 lbs, but trailer walls are built much thicker now and feature more standard equipment than they used to which adds more weight.

The Outback has a Class I hitch. So, It looks like I need to go with maybe a 13 foot Scamp.

Anyone in St.Louis MO with a 13 foot My wife and I could see. We've never seen nor been in one of these. At 6-4 it might be good to know that I can fit.

I'm more concerned about being able to sleep than stand. Also, the amount of floor space for the dogs to sleep.

We've tent camped when I did not have the time to go get our Airstream out of storage. With a small trailer we could keep it at home and JUST GO!:)

If we can go small enough I might be able to retire our Suburban.

The bed in the 13' Casita is 6'6" x 48" same in the 16' Casita Spirit and Freedom.

The bed in the 16' Casita Liberty* is about** 7' x 6'6".

The bed in the 17' Casita Spirit and Freedom is 6'6" x 54".

The bed in the 17' Liberty* is about** 7'4" x 6'6".

Bear in mind that the rear of the trailer is rounded in the corners on all modles and this cuts the rear sleeping area a bit.

* The liberty is usually slept in length wise.

** I'm guessing on the length, I know its longer then wider and the 17'Lib. is 4" longer then the 16' Lib.

The bed in our Liberty is almost square. The length is 6'10 and the width is 6'6". I just added up the bed board sizes to get the length.

Hi,

I was just reading this post as I am in the same situation. I have a 6cy Jeep Wrangler. My engine is the same used in the Cherokee/Grand Cherokee but due the short wheel base of the Wrangler I am limited to 2000 lb and a 300 lb toungue weight. I have been looking over the different fiberglass trailers and thought the scamp was the lightest for it's size. (16'/1750lb?) Any comments or suggestions on the right trailer for me would be greatly appreciated.
