Trailer: 1981 Trillium 5500 (tandem)

Just purchased a 1981 Trillium 5500 with a tandem axle. I am pulling it with a 1998 Mazda MPV that I could only get a class II hitch. The trailers gross vechicle weight is 3000 lbs, which I beleive is the max weight of trailer and everything loaded into it. Does anyone have a users manual for this trailer or know the dry weight?

Congrats on the Trillium, My 5500 has only a single axle.
Looks like your water heater is on the opposite side as well, and you have an awning!
My trailer is about 2800 before loading. The best way to get your weight is to got to a municipal dump scale and weigh it, or a sand/gravel company if they'll let you, they have certified scales.

PS lets see some more pics.

Congratulations! I too have a 5500, but it is really rough and I am restoring it. I don't know the weight of mine, but I suspect you will be pushing the class II hitch limit when loaded.
I have a Toyota Tacoma (the wifes) and Toyota Tundra (mine) that I tow with. Both are 6 cylinder and pull just fine.
My water heater is on that side too - it's a single axle '80.
Please post more pics!!
Cheers, Alec

A gross weight of 3000 lb is probably the gross vehicle weight rating, which would be the maximum allowed weight. That might be reasonable for a trailer of this size; it is comparable to my 17' Boler. It does seem low to me for a tandem version of this trailer - perhaps each axle is quite small (low capacity).
In the topic "Trillium 5500, Want all info on RV" I quoted someone from another forum who listed the single axle 5500 at 3000 lb when loaded, and mentioned that the tandem is heavier (interesting, since that would put it over the gross rating). How much of that is cargo?
In the same topic, David linked to a site by Doug and Kathy Roach, which lists an empty weight for a single-axle at 1850 lb... now I'm wondering if that is the axle only, not including tongue weight.

Thanks Guys,
We are pretty happy with our Trillium. I started looking for a fiberglass trailer last summer and finally found this rare one. I'm positive I bought it from the same guy quoted in the topic "Trillium 5500, Want all info on RV". He also used to have a 4500, and was selling two 5500 Triliums, and restoring a 13' bigfoot.
Looks like I am maxing out my MPV with the Class II hitch, but it tows really well. I average about 90 kph with it and it seems very stable. I am going to have to weight the trailer at the municipal dump scale to be sure. Maybe time for a new tow vehicle.
Everything is in really good shape except the furnace does not work and the water heater tank was cracked. I'm guessing it was not emptied in the winter at one time and froze. I disconnected the water lines and by-passed the tank. No hot water for now. I believe these water heater are standard Atwood heaters that I can replace for about $300+-
I'll post some photos soon.

On my furnace there was a switch inside the front cover that says 110v or 12v, the furnace only runs in the 12v position, and it takes a long time to bleed the air out of the lines and get the propane to light.

Unfortunately the furnace is all in pieces, and even though I am fairly handy, I wouldn't have a clue where to start to even try and put it back together . I figure I may just remove it and gain more storage and use a ceramic heater when I need some heat. I'll have to think about it.
On another topic, from what I have read there were about 65+- of these 5500's made. The last 4 numbers in my serial # are 0067, so I figure I may have one of the last one produced.
Just out of curiosity, what are the last numbers on yours?

my 81 is 55xxxx0137
If you pull the furnace and it is a coleman, I'd like a chance to buy any parts you want to get rid of.

Based on yours and Al's number, I guess I was wrong on the serial #'s. I assumed that the last number was the number of the unit being made. Either that or there were more than 65+- made.
Oh well, I guess I'll still keep it though.
The furnace is a coleman ST 200. If I take it out, it's yours, but I still might tackle it.

Is this trailer still for sale? I think I live close to where the trailer is located. Would appreciate getting contact information.
Thanks,
Craig
