Trillium Fix Update - Belly Band Caulk

Attachment 36992I began removing massive amounts of moldy, old caulk glopped around the belly band, exposing a nice bead of bright white caulk underneath.
The pic below shows the ball of caulk pulled off a 3 ft. section, the exposed white caulk, and the next area to tackle.

Too bad the white caulk is shrinking in spots, so the whole mess needs to come out.

From I've read, I need to carefully dig it out and then clean the entire area for a good seal. I'll research what cleaner to use (Alcohol? Acetone?)

I have been complimented on my caulking skills, so that's not a big deal, but I saw this at Lowes and wondered if anybody had heard of or used this product (in white at the store):
Shop Frost King Fingertip Rope Caulk Grey at Lowes.com

I was looking for butyl tape for my windows, and the young man said it was the same thing, but the box had no ingredients listed, so I passed. Now I'm thinking that maybe it would be good for an easy, even bead around the belly band since it claims to seal, remain flexible, and resist mold/mildew.
Any thoughts?

Varsol should do a nice job of removing the old putty. I can't comment on the rope caulk.
