U Haul

Have a chance to buy a u haul but no paper work at all. All I can get is a bill of sale. I am in NY and they are a real pain. Does anyone know of a company or people who know how to get it registered?
Thank so much

What I was able to do with our vintage teardrop, which had no paperwork other than a bill of sale, was I went into NY DMV and told them what I had. Luckily I had a good clerk waiting on me, she said "has this been in your possession for more than one year?" as she's shaking her head yes. Gave me some paperwork, then I had to get a certified weight slip, got that at the dump, and I was good to go. However that was a 1946 trailer that did not require a title. The Uhaul does need a title and a 17 digit VIN number. You may have to register it as "home made" and they will then assign you a number. Also look into registering it in Maine for a year, then transfer it to NY. Did the current owner ever have a title? If so they would have to apply for a replacement for lost title.

Curious how forum members get so irate and jump in to help when somebody's trailer is stolen, and then when somebody has a trailer without title or VIN, they have suggestions on how to get around licensing requirements.

Registry
Point is good Glenn;
Our boler has a manufacturer number and a Ontario registration number from when Earlton boler works registered it. Ownership and outside stamp agree.
Uhaul is US based but would have a sticker or frame stamp I think original #. This would be a safer registering route.

There are DMV approved means of licensing a trailer that the title is missing, as I suggested. I see it all the time, trailers have sat unused for years, owner dies, paperwork gets lost, sold multiple times and never registered, whatever. Finding Uhaul VIN numbers can be quite a challenge, any of you experts know where they are located, or if they exist at all. These were corporate owned trailers and may have been licensed by other means or in states with less requirements. Or should all trailers that have missing titles be scrapped or investigated as possibly stolen.

The department of transportation website for your particular state will provide you with all the information as well as the forms to fill out that you need to apply for a title and also the forms for getting the temporary registration done. They will also have a list of the inspection stations on that website.

As this is a situation where each state is in control of the process of licensing the vehicles in that state it is a situation where what forum members have done in their own states may or may not be what you will need to do. So just go directly to your own state DOT website. It does not require a specialized private third party agency, you can do the work yourself. Just follow the instructions.

OP is in NY, as I am also. My local DMV office is only 20 minutes away so I just go in and talk to them. They are always very helpful. A couple times I had to get a notarized signature from the seller when some paperwork was lost. Also had to take photos or pencil rubbings of VIN numbers a couple times. I thought the pencil rubbings was kind of odd, but that's what they wanted.
