Seeing some of the changes in the Scamp table thread, I am wondering how many of you have modified the dinettes in your trailers to create a U-shaped dinette. I think it is an interesting idea, but as I was standing in my Scamp looking at the space, I could already hear my kids complaining about their legs touching!
Is leg space an issue and/or the smaller table?

It would be harder to get in and out if sitting way in the back. I had a u shaped table in my old pop up and I hated it.,

With the right encouragement any child can be made to cooperate and behave swell.

P.S. Now why didn't I think of this when my kids were younger . . .

Once of my few annoyances in either of my Burros is...
the U shape dinette.
The back seat is useless. On the 17, it doesn't even have cut outs to make a good cubby.

I am new to the site for the most part, but my wife and I purchased a 1996 19' Scamp in Nov '07. Ours has a U shaped dinette, from the factory, (at least it looks that way. The table top is supported on a pillar into sockets on the bottum of the table and into the floor. Now we have played around in the Scamp, but no overnights trips until May (going to Letchworth for 4 days, yeah!!) but the U shape seemed very nice to us. The table rotates to get in and out of the booth, and the back is small, as far a clearance. But our 9 year old son, fits great. But my wife and I liked the setup, and We also thought it would be cozy for the two of us to pull the table out and sit with the extra cushion as a back stop, to lounge and watch tv, etc. Hope this helps.

Someone mentioned a system like a computer keyboard slide out.... well this got me thinking of three of them. table is rather small, only the size of three of these drawers (Yellow) "CLOSED". makes it rather narrow. top piece above the drawers is only large enough for brackets to hold drawers with space ontop (Green) for salt/ ketchup etc etc. and sturdy enough to take the weight. Typical table tube supports it (Blue) but it would have to be welded to rectangular plate and screwed to the (Green) top. The typcal under table camper tube socket thing like they put on the floors would be too big in this spot.
After you sit in place... you slide the drawer out toward you over your lap to eat.
I supose you could do 5 eating spots with narrow drawers resulting in two slide outs on each side and one larger at the rear.
PS- thinking about it more I guess the Green area would have to be an "H" not a "t" Would be missing some brackets to hold the drawers as drawn.

U-Shaped dinette... what works for me may not work for you! I removed the original table (carefully wrapped and stored it and all the original hardware, of course!) from my 1981 Trillium 5500. Added a board for comfortable seating between the seats under the front window and cut foam to fit for a cushion. Found a 2' square pedestal table that fit perfectly, cut and upholstered cushions for backrests all the way around. I love to stretch out across the cushions under the window with a cup of tea and enjoy the view. My husband sets up his fly-tying vise next to me and we're happy as clams in a cozy shell. I made a velcro'd 'curtain' for fly-tying supplies and other stuff under the new seat and it's great to be able to access it easily by sliding the table out. We love the ability to move the table around or even take it outside for an impromptu picnic. I'm absolutely sure that, 20 years ago with 2 young kids, this would not have been a good fit at all. This option certainly floats our boat! If our lifestyle changes we still have the original equipment to slide back in.... Helen

I remodeled the rear dinette in our 91 Scamp 19 to include U shaped layout. You can see pix on the Yahoo Scampers Mods+ group (access requires membership which is free).
http://autos.ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/Sca...tos/browse/2b9f
The pix should make the how and why fairly clear.
You can also see pix of Floyd's wraparound couch on the same group.
http://autos.ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/Sca...tos/browse/e74d
This configuration may work better for couples than families due to the leg room issue but as our pix show you can achieve some added storage space with a little creativity.
Cheers

U-Shape Dinette...I did save the original table and hardware in case we change our minds. The picture doesn't show the 'curtain' that covers the bench under the window. Here's what the Trill looks like now:

Three questions for you, KB.
1) How big (dimensions and capacity) is the water tank?
2) How does that affect your weight distribution?

(I'd love to free up the bunkers under the dinette seats in my 5er and in Lynne's Surfside project trailer, but worry about shifting weight too far back in the 5er and really worry about that in the standard-hitch Surfside.)

3) COOL EXTERIOR ACCESS DOOR: Gotta get me some! What are it's dimensions and were'd you find it?
