Ok, these cabinets are DISGUSTING! :sick
The trailer has been sitting for a least 5 years. Someone had their sugar stored in there and it's all encrusted into the front edge. There's a bunch of old mac tac that someone tried to remove, but only got half.

I'm thinking it might be easiest to just remove the cabinet unit to give it a proper cleaning (wire brush?) and restoration. I'll also be replacing the doors. Is this reasonable, or will I just be creating a bigger problem?

I know what you mean. I have no idea what was in my upper cabinets. I went at it with a plastic brush and every cleaning product you can think of. I'm a baking soda and vinegar person usually but found it laughed at everything except scrubbing bubbles/tilex. They are clean now thanks mostly to an endless supply of clean rags to mop up and remove the gunk. Removing cabinets you want to keep sounds like way more work, but maybe someone else will have a better idea. Also, I wore goggles and gloves. A space suit would have been nice.

removing cabinets can mean a big surprise. Mine came out in pieces. the upper ones were in one piece, but usually I had trouble finding that last screw so ripped it out. not good if your wanting to put them back, and there brings up another problem. your going to need help getting them back up unless you can figure out a way to get them in tight with bracing. I think Maggie may have the right idea. Clean and clean some more.

Thanks girls for your replies. I guess it would be opening up more potential problems than it would solve. I will 'suit up' as best as possible to battle the grunge <img src=http://pages.prodigy.net/rogerlori1/emoticons/jedi1.gif/>

We were lucky with the one we purchased with being clean. They took good care of it that way but it is all the tiny things that are getting fustrating. You change one thing and then something else needs changed.
Today I cleaned the blinds, used bleach in a spray bottle, took them outside and they cleaned up real nice. Even the strings that hold them together came out like new. That saved some money.
I bet you will be suprised how much you can get it cleaned up. Your lucky the ants didn't find it and move in. They sure like sugar.

Yes, but I'm afraid that they still might, or worse, yellowjackets. I'm going to have to get all that mess taken care of soon. (If only I could clone myself and double amount of project time....)

If you happen to have some kind of a wet vac or carpet clearn you can sometimes use it to suck up dirty water. You will have to rinse it well after to get the sugar out and you can't use harsh cleaners.

But, it can be very useful in areas where you need a lot of cleaning water but don't want to have it run everywhere. I use a Little Green Steam Machine by Bissell (about $50 at Walmart). Does a reasonable job on carpets and upholstery - not a ton of slurping power, but it does the trick for pet accidents and small stains.

For wet cleaning I use a bucket of water, a scrubby rag, and the vac. Slop on some water, scrub fast and suck it back up before it runs everywhere.

When I bought my trashed egg it needed a cleaning fiercely too.

I started with buckets and rags. That lasted about two days...and the results still wasn't very pleasing.

Had to do a better job... something I could like... live in or with.

I took a hole saw, the kind you drill door knob holes with, and cut a drain hole in the front and rear floor. That way either way the trailer was tipping, water would drain.

Then I was ready for high pressure washing. Man, worked great. I'd lick any part of my interior if asked to.

Then I went to Home Depot and bought PCV plumbing caps that fit my holes I drilled. ( a actually found PVC threaded couplers that I cut down to the threads on the inside and glued them into the holes. THe plugs were then easy to thread into the already threaded couplers which are glued into place.

Never know if it makes sense when described to others but it makes sense to me.

Also then the clean floor was ready for linoleum.
