Wagonmaster 6000B heater problem

Hi,
I am Dave Leonard, a new member with a 1975 13ft. Boler.
The pilot light on the heater some times stays alight and some times goes out a few minutes later after releasing the button. The thermo coupling appears to work but it seems is just too far from the pilot light to be reliable. Can I lift off the firebox to gain access while the heater is still installed by unscrewing the four nuts or is the rear vent attached to it which would obviously be a problem?

I hope someone can help, thanks in advance for advice.
