Washer and Dryer!

My new 77 Trillium 4500 will be one of the few vintage Trilliums with an onboard washer and dryer. A few years back I bought one of these portable non-electric clothes washers (long story...). I just realized that with the addition of a folding clothes rack or clothesline, I'll have my own laundry facilities wherever I go.

The washer is only $42.99 at this site www.beprepared.com. They also sell other camping gear and food storage items.

Lehman's looks interesting though. I'll have to spend more time there checking stuff out.

I'm bringing along a freestanding clothes rack (I think it was like $14.99 at soem place like Target). Even though it takes up more space than a clothesline, I can dry, um, delicates, indoors where the whole wolrd ain't seeing my laundry.

My question is "does it work?" Have you actually used it, JR? Is it any better than soaking the clothes in a dishpan and stirring it occasionally with a spoon? If it's any good, for $20 it's a deal!

Like I said, long story. But the princicple advantage I can see is that it won't spill. The instructions and the sales info claims it forces hot water through your clothing, getting them cleaner than handwashing. It seems to me it will be easier to use than a bucket because you don't have to be handling the clothes. My plan is to put clothes in with hot water in the morning, and allow the motion of travel to swish them aroudn for me. Rinse at lunch and hang to dry when I park.

$20 is a steal. I'll give it a try and let you all know what I think next week after the movers are out of my house!

And it's so cute! I'll be interested to see how well it works. Cleaning in a dishpan never seems so tough-- it's getting all the soap out that's hard. I'd love an in-trailer solution to that.

Steinbeck mentioned a pothole-driven washing rig he put together for his camper in "Travels with Charlie." I think I need to track down a copy and re-read how he did it. Something about a bucket on a bungee cord in a bigger bucket, I think.

I sure wouldn't mind skipping laundramats while on the road.
