Dissolving flooring under a connection leak . Pervasive and wet after a year of no leak. Needed to replace a corroded water heater and found all the rot.

I am trying to share the experience. I have several pictures, but I have not found the correct way to attach them. As we put it all back together, someone who has done this heater replacement, might have some suggestions.
Such as, "do we need to replace all the carpet that was under the heater and the fresh water tank?" Does it serve any purpose? What is the little box next to the water heater with electric wires coming in and out? It sort of looks like a fuse box, but no fuses.

Most likely that little box is the electric igniter relay.

If you want to know the actual extent of the water damage & avoid a health issue (bad stuff grows in dark damp locations) then YUP you need to pull up the carpet and replace it, as well as any of the floor that has been damaged under the carpet.
