What this country needs . . .

is a decent 9" roof vent. I replaced the one in the head with a commonly available replacement which is identical except does not have small steel clip hinges, one of which had rusted thru on the old one. Despite this "improvement," the lid does not register correctly when it closes. I have messed with the opening lever to crank the lid a bit to one side. Kept closed after this twist treatment, it is fine until it's left open in the sun for a bit at which time it "remembers" where it wants to be and won't close. In addition, I did a dumb thing and cranked it open such that the wall or roof dam on the vent cracked on the hinge side. So I have learned that there is no positive stop for the opening lever. There should be because if Grandad can do this, you can bet that Jr. or Sis can do it also. Several of the denizens of Elkhart IN have this available on eBay. Sometimes listed as J-Mar product. Gets POS rating from me! Are there other (better quality) 9" vents available?

Will Rogers (I think) said what this country needs is a good five cent cigar.

Let me guess, this is your bathroom vent? There are very few makers of 9" roof vents, and unfortunately due to the shape of the burro's roof above the bathroom, a standard 14" vent won't fit. I replaced mine with a Heng labeled one like this
Amazon.com: Heng's 17511-G1 9" White Elixir Opaque Vent: Automotive

It seems to be working OK, it did discolor in the sun rather quickly though. Also the four rivets holding the lid to the hardware need to be sealed otherwise rain seeps in between and leaks down.

After multiple replacements of the Elixir 9" version and no other vents available in that size I opted to redesign the whole thing, since the Elixir is really a piece of junk.

The solution was to make the fan opening into a skylight and install one of those round fans which I think are found in Casitas, Olivers, etc. Two acrylic panels, the top slightly bronzed, with some maple trim and some much tougher stuff on top, with two coats of epoxy clearcoat in the mix before Interlux Brightside topcoats. I did go to some lengths to make the thing waterproof and so far it is working well. The new fan is quite good and can be left open in the rain with no leakage.

The big dividend is that the light is great and I don't worry about leaving the fan cover open, considering my limited memory and attention span.

Yes I have the "Elixir" in the head--ur a--lavatory. It is the case that there is not a flat pad on the right side for this critter as there is for the forteener on the left. My FanTastic fan install was very simple and certainly no water entry there. I would like to keep the 9x9 in the throne room for a very simple reason. Can be left open; shower curtain and accordion door closed and ventilation is maintained without worrying about a bit of rain getting in. If you're going to leak, what better place than over a drain as they said to the 10 week pup. I also would prefer that it close on the gasket and keep out rain when I want it to. I'm not sinking another 30 bucks in the identical item so I guess I'm SOL? Maybe do some more tinkering with the lid and try to patch the cracks on the rim Thanks for the hint about the rivets to the lever guide. I may be getting some water there also.

If you've got all the parts to the lid, use JB Weld to glue it back together. That stuff is tough! Other parts will break before the weld breaks. THEN, paint the entire thing with Fusion paint. In fact, if you install new plastic parts on the exterior of the trailer, I'd suggest painting with Fusion before the install... slows down the UV damage to plastic.

I get both at Lowes. YMMV

PC11 marine epoxy is great stuff too to fix cracks, it's tough.

Mine vent doesn't shut 100% either due to the curvature of the roof mounting surface, I can see a sliver of light when the vent lid is shut. But even so I get no leaks at all. I put a dab of Dicor self leveling sealant on each of the rivets on the lid, otherwise I did get leakage there.
