Wheel lock for theft control?

I have two trailers in the drive way. The one that is out front has the wheel lock that is shown in the first post in this thread, and a ball lock on the hitch. No spare to change out. The other one has a ball lock, and a hitch pin lock. There is also a school bus usually parked in front of it. Ya, I have a big driveway.
That said, I don't actually worry much about theft.

Interesting that Glenn is the only one to zero in on the more likely threat of theft, at least for families that all go on their camping trips together (and don't leave someone home watching things). Its not at the campgrounds for sure.

I don't have a solution that substantial eliminates the threat of a burglary at home when we are away, but I do have multiple cameras that detect motion and upload photos to the "cloud." If you walk up to my door, your photo is uploaded to an off site server so even if you break in and take the equipment, the evidence remains. If you go near my utility box to try and disable my internet service, your photo will be saved before you even get your hands on the lines. At times there is even a camera in the Scamp so if someone simply walks inside, I got their photo. Again, I might lose the camera, but the photo lives on. (Of course this requires Internet access).

It might not stop a break in but it makes it much, much more likely that the criminal will serve time, or in some other way get his just deserts.

Am i paranoid? No, its a hobbyist system that was fun to put together. And to be honest, the motion detection is problematic.

And if someone does break-in, they have to break-in a second time to get to the really good stuff. The alarm will be sounding so maybe they don't want to stick around.

Don't know, let's hope we never find out! But it's better than most. And like I said, if they really want it, there's not much you can do. So let's make it as hard for them as we can.

Leave your stabilizers down in the driveway. Anything that can slow them down.
If they don't care about the stabs (or don't see them) it's going to make a lot of noise and sparks down the road, and is sure to attract attention.
Then you can follow the skid marks on the pavement to retrieve your trailer!!

Do you really think those wheel locks are going to prevent somebody from dragging the trailer down the street just because a wheel won't turn?

What's to stop it from being drug up on a flat bed tow truck??

Well B., just like we talked about the last time this subject was rehashed on this forum, its a matter of time and expense. Not too many crooks have a flatbed or can get one without a lot of effort.

While it's true that if they want it bad enough, they will get it. The essence of security is to make it harder, more expensive, more time consuming, and ultimently more risky for the thief. So much so, that he moves on to something easier.

Its like the bear attack defense, I don't have to outrun the bear, only the other people also running from the bear. I don't have to totally secure my property, I only need to secure it more than my neighbors do (taking into account relative value).

While traveling it would be pretty difficult for somebody to steal your trailer while traveling down the road. Even when you stop for various reasons the would be thief knows you'll be back soon.

California and Califorians might be different than the rest of the world.

Search the forums for "stolen trailer." Not paranoia. A sad reality.

Reading FGRV and Escape Forum since 2008, I recall less than a half dozen stolen trailers in North America. I'm sure you can find more, but it's not an everyday event.

I think you should do exactly what you think you should if it helps alleviate any anxiety about leaving your trailer unattended. Whether that's a campground, storage yard, driveway or trail head. Trailer ownership shouldn't be an anxiety inducer!


But I can tell you this, all the naysayers about security will never send you a check, nor apologize for steering you away from security stuff if your trailer disappears. They'll hide in the bushes.

It may be true that the boot is free. You do, however, have to pay an arm and a leg to get the key!

Even reality has to be looked at in it's proper prospective.
I figure the chances of my trailer being stolen are about as good as my chances of winning the lottery. Your chances of being in an accident while towing your trailer are far greater than your trailer being stolen so why not leave your trailer locked up in your yard just to be safe. PARANOIA ???

When we winter-camped at Cave Creek last February, we were the ONLY campers in the campground. Some distance from civilization. With occasional fishermen and other randoms just driving through.

Californians are as nice and as honest as the rest of the world. But random uglies are pretty well fairly distributed everywhere.

I don't know the statistics on this nationwide, but a friend's beautiful, new, 35' trailer was stolen from a secure storage facility here in town ON CAMERA. The trailer has not been recovered nor have the thieves been caught.

Well, having naysayers hide in the bushes doesn't bother me at all. It's when they come out of the bushes and get snarky that is a problem.
