Window gasket

Hello,
I'm tearing apart my Love Bug for a remodel and some paint. My gaskets for the front and rear window are cut and not a continuous seal. Is this the way hard gaskets come or was this done by the previous owner? I hope I am making sense

I'm not sure about a Love Bug, and not absolutely sure what you mean by 'cut.' Do you mean that if you remove it, it is one long piece rather than a circle? If so, that is the way the one on my emergency window is.

If you mean multiple cuts, I don't have an answer. If you mean a single one, I assume that it comes in a roll, is cut to length then put in.

I hate to keep prefacing everything with 'I don't know about a Love Bug,' but just want you to know that I am guessing.

It appears to me that it has shrunk over the years. My guess is that it met at one point in time. If it's not leaking, then I wouldn't worry about it. If it is, then when you replace it, I would 'push' the new piece on rather than 'pull' it on. Does that make sense? That would pervent it from shrinking so much in the future.

Ray just replaced the window in a U-Haul, so he can probably help on this one.

BTW, I think it was very clear. I just wanted to make sure my brain absorbed it correctly. It does malfunction at times. ;)

I'm betting they are cut, one cut. The window in the door of our Trillium is like that and has shrunk also leaving a gap. Our former stick built trailer was also like that. All I did was fill the gap with caulk.

Jamie-if the Love Bug is like the older Boler(single pane plexiglass-Lexan or whatever) the rubber gasket and locking strip will have a single cut at the centre bottom.It appears to be a common problem that the gasket separates and many of the ones I have seen all have the telltale glob of silicone seal as a badge of honor at that spot."Scamp" window gaskets match the Boler type and I might suggest if you are taking the old one out consider replacing the entire gasket.

Jamie -call "Scamp" @ 1-800-346-4962-ask for Steve(assuming he is still in parts).I was there last fall and their parts list shows two window sizes 1)19 3/8 by 43 and 2)17 by 42.The gasket material comes in rolls so they can cut it to your window size-as you may have a late former owner modification? If you haven't used them before I found them quite helpful-unfortunately they won't deliver to Canada so we had a nice trip to Minn.last fall with a shopping list in hand.Some "Scamp" parts are directly interchangeable with Boler parts but many are not -but they were quite good at correcting the error of my ways(many times!).

I'll give Scamp a call tomorrow. My windows are 19 3/8 by 43 inches. I have been meaning to call to get some replacement hinges for my door.
