$29.99 Canopy/Awning - A Good Deal!

FYI if you are looking for a Canopy/Awning..My wife just picked up our new Canopy/Awning yesterday for our Boler from K-Mart at only $29.99 on sale (can be ordered online for $28 with store pickup), a 9'x9' dome canopy made by Northwest Territory...seems to be very good quality for the price...Tractor Supply had one very similar under a different brand name today for the same price...I will try to get some pictures posted

Looks very similar to BusDepot awning, minus the special attachments for VW Buses. Good find!

Ian I looked at one in the store today that was assembled and on display (tractor supply version) and it seems to be of good quality with fiberglass tent type poles underneath the canopy with steel frame & corner posts. With corner poles staked into the ground & pole ropes used I think it will be sturdy, but what reasonably priced canopy/awning can handle severe tornado/hurricane like winds...we are gonna use ours Saturday for a cookout so we will see how it does...I had one of the heavy duty instant canopy varieties I purchased several years ago and a strong wind crumpled the frame... it was an expensive one, so if the wind gets this one I am not out that much...

Wind is the biggest destroyer of awnings and canopies. It doesn't take much wind to get them airborne, the first time we used the awning on our Casita a light breeze caught it, I still remember my Superman impression as I jumped through the air and caught the front edge of the awning as the legs were slowly lifting into the air ... no damage thankfully.

I have installed the Shady Boy awning on our Boler and in 2 weeks I will try it out for the first time. According to many internet comments about that awning they handle the wind quite well

It is very much like the BusDepot awning. I undid the seam on one side and sewed on awning take so that we can actually attach it to the trailer using the awning gutter. The tape was easy to sew and cost $0.25 a foot. We love it.

I saw the one Tractor Supply was selling last month. I didn't think it would take much wind, but I was tempted anyway because it was so simple and lightweight. If I were doing a tour with short stops rather than a week in one place, I might leave the First-Up at home and just use something like this when the wind allowed. I was at Tractor Supply on another mission, so I passed, but I may give it another look.

Claire, I like what you did. Makes me wish I had an awning rail.

They call it Welting and it looks like this I bought it at a tent and awning store. It comes in plastic and cloth. I prefer the cloth as any mistakes in sewing the plastic leaves a hole. It looks like the store might do mail order. products

Kevin, it looks like this is just the wall panel to add to the canopy, which is a separate item. The 10 x 10 straight-leg canopy is around $89 at Target.

These all have one major shortcoming. No bug protection screening. I'll stick with my Clam. Yeah, I know, these are just "cheapo" pop-ups, but the old adage "You get what you pay for" still holds true. If you just want a rain cover for cheap, they still sell those ugly blue tarps. Can't wait to see some of these things blowing across the campground when the breeze picks up.

True - it was purchased many years ago and I don't remember the price, about $100 seems to come to mind. It was used three times a week at Farmers Markets for five summers, so it got put up and down a lot. We have used it for camping for another eight years, so we aren't complaining about the initial cost.


Last summer we used the awning and left the heavy canopy at home. Putting Velcro on the three sides of the awning meant we could stick on the wind walls or bug netting (but that wasn't particularly useful as the bugs came at us from under the camper!). May try to fix that problem sometime.


So many different ways of camping and solving the hassles. I guess everyone has their own personal idea of what is needed to feel comfy!
