80's bigfoot Removed Gaucho

Hey all.

I've decided to buy a retro 17.5 bigfoot instead of brand new. Because well I'm being cheap and I need a project just as much as I need a new trailer.

So I've started short listing the available units. One the previous owners of one unit removed the cabinet/gaucho above the couch. I read "somewhere" that if you remove the cabinets around the ceiling perimeter on a fibreglass trailer if could cause problems because it affects the rigidity of the unit...

Any truth to this?

Yes, the cabinets do supply structural support to the shell. They can be reconfigured somewhat but they can not be removed without supplying new structural support.

The 17.5 Bigfoot started production with the 2005 model and is still being made today $38K for a new one. The 17 was made up until 2004. Earlier 17's are the ones that often came with the drop axle.

This is a little late so I'm not sure if you're still around, but since you're probably referring to my thread, let me say:

Yes, cabinets provide structural support. However if your trailer is like mine, you can look at the cabinet in question and see that it doesn't even contact the ceiling. There's an inch or so gap between the top of the cabinet and the ceiling.

So no, in this case, I don't believe the bunk bed cabinet provides much, if any structural support in a Bigfoot.
