Add-a-shelf

We found that there isn't a lot of counter space for cooking in the Pooka-Burro, so I added an extension shelf to the right of the stove. I used 3/4" ply, laminated it with the same WilsonArt laminate as the counter & tables, and edged it with the banding to match. Then I mounted it to the side of the counter with piano hinge.

But any folding brackets wouldn't let the shelf fold flat against the counter when the seat is in use; I made a removable bracket from 1" angle aluminum that seats in a narrow cleat just below the folded shelf, and slips into a slot in the underside of the shelf. It still sloped a bit so I aded a 1/4" ply slotted piece to raise it level.

The bracket is lightweight and stores in a cubbie. When in the UP position, it's so stable we can leave it up while towing.

Looks nice and we'll be happy for the added work surface!

Next: the new screen door assembly! (this weekend).

Wow, Felix, that's a great fix to the counter space issue! I think I'm gonna shamelessly plagerize your use of extrusion for the stiffener.

I like it!!

clever mod to get the shelf to fold flat. We had folding shelf brackets on one counter extension, but later decided we didn't need to fold it so replaced the folding brackets with regular shelf brackets. for the counter extensions we used the tops off a pair of wood TV trays, which we already had.

Very nice! I also love your color scheme/fabric choices in the upholstery and counter top.

Felix -- very slick! How did you attach the piano hinge and lower bracket to the inside of the cab? Did you add a backing piece to screw into? Did you have to remove the stove and fridge? I'm totally stealing your idea.....

So nice.

Can't decide which we like better; the smart mod or the fantastic colour scheme. Looking forward to your reply to Shannon, and will queue up to see the forthcoming screen door adventures!

Looks great, I did a very similar mod, but used a commercially available locking bracket. Provides a lot of extra counter space.

Thanks everyone for all the nice comments! Shannon, I use #8 stainless steel Philips raised countersunk machine screws and cup washers for most of my attachments, with a locknut on the back. There are 6 screws in 12" of piano hinge, so I didn't use backing. Plenty of shear stregth.

Removing the drawer allowed my hand to reach behind the holes to secure the nuts. No I didn't need to remove the stove or refrigerator.

I try not to use pointed 'wood screws' as it will leave pointy sharp things inside the cubbies to tear stuff! And, when you're fishing around you can catch your hand on those screws...so just machine screws unless it's dead space (like the overhead).

*sigh* Too many switches and things on our 16' Scamp for this to work. BUT... I may figure out some sort of a drop-in-a-bracket gizmo to do this. Hmmmm....

I mounted an aluminum plate to the fiberglass with 3M VHB tape, then attached the brackets to the aluminum with short screws.

Thanks for the info, makes sense... but how did you attach the lower bracket? It looks like it is attached about midway down the fridge... ?

With just a bit of contortion, I got my hand down there thru the drawer opening. And I have large hands! Actually it was quite a bit of contortion!
