Adding new shocks to a 13' Scamp

Has anyone upgraded their shocks so that when you drive down a rough road everything doesn't get thrown around as much. I know Casita has an upgrade but I didn't know if that would apply to the 13' Scamps.

I love having torsion axles eliminating the need for shocks. Doesn't Scamp use them too?

Single axles do demonstrate more bouncing on rough roads than tandem axles.

Orbital Machine was making a shock absorber kit for the Casita 17 torsion axles. Kind of an elaborate fabricating job done very nice. Not sure if they still make it. Have heard that anyone that installed it was very happy with the results.

After I posted this i asked a friend about it and he crawled underneath my Scamp and told me I had the torsion axle and not shocks! He said i'd have to change my axle and i don't think that's going to happen.

Hi there,
We put tires with higher rating and wheels to handle the higher pressure tires on our scamp13'. Trailer tracked better and things didn't get thrown around as much. Only had to go up one grade of tire to do this.

The European ALKO axles have shocks available for them.
Too bad you can't get them in the US.

Monroe used to sell a shock kit for Scamps but it's no longer available.
Got these sketches from Floyd a few years ago but never got the shocks.
Maybe if you're lucky you can find a set still on a shelf somewhere.

The 22° up angle complicates the installation of the Monroe design on a Scamp13.

Others have made custom brackets using the backing plate bolts with good success.

IMO there is little to be gained by adding shocks to the Scamp13.

The only real problem I have found is when bad construction techniques result in repetitive screed lines on concrete highways.
This causes the trailer to dribble like a basketball. The effect is hard to mitigate even by changing speed.
Other than that, my trailer rides so well that I can leave unsecured items like paper towel roles on the counter behind the stove during transport without a problem.
The axle probably works best when supporting around 3/4 of its design rating. Tongue weight on the high side, attitude slightly down.
I have towed with vehicle wheelbases ranging from 105" to 126"
with varying rear overhangs. While overall handling is affected, I can't clearly see a difference in bounce on the trailer axle itself.
