Another New Tongue Box

I have had the typical aluminum tongue box on my Boler for the past 3 years, I just didn't like the straight angles against the curved lines of the Boler so I built something a bit different.

Very nice woodworking. Is that cedar?

Yes it is cedar, wanted t use a light weight wood. Construction is similar to making a barrel, each 2" wide wood stave is angle cut and glued together to form the curves.

Fiberglassed on the inside, the staves are thicker than a canoe to give some additional durability

Are you sure you weren't a barrel cooper in your previous life? Very nice joinery. It's always nice to see true craftsmanship.

I love working with wood, and over the years I have I have accumulated a very nice workshop and lots of experience.

This is my first attempt at cooperage. I really debated between this method and steaming the wood, but thought the verticle grain would look better than horizontal. Do you realize there are stave angle calculators on-line that provide the correct angle? these are 4.5 deg

Wow. Speaking as another woodworker, I can imagine the work that went into it. Very nice.

The hardest, and scariest, part of the entire project was cutting the top profile to fit the curved lid ... many hours contemplating the best way to mark and cut it knowing a mistake could mean starting all over again. In the end I suspended the lid over the box and using marking dividers marked the lid profile onto the box, then used a saber saw (jig saw in some areas) to make the cut. Fine tuned and profiled the bevel with a bent sander. This project taught me a few new tricks.

Fabulous job ! What type finish did you use on the cedar ? Do you have something on your tow vehicle like mud flaps for additional protection ? It's o pretty, I would hate to see it get dirty.

Wondering when someone would notice that Jim
Right now it is acting as a temporary spacer. I installed the "A" frame jack and knowing it would hang to low I bought the Jack-E-Up so I could remove the jack during travel, but the jack will not work with a wheel attached. It becomes unstable. By reversing it and using the base as a spacer it raises the jack enough that there are no clearance problems. Considering the cost I will be building a proper spacer and will be selling this Jack-E-Up.

The finish is 3 coats of Sikkens Cetol 1. Yes I use Rock Tamers on the back of my 4Runner which protects the front of the trailer as much as possible.
