I think you can safely say that installing a permanent battery monitor is mostly a personal choice among owners. I think everyone would agree that having some way of checking your battery voltage level and not running it down too low will help your battery to keep performing longer.

To me there are two important functions of a battery monitor. 1) understand the amount of current draw for all of the things that are consuming 12 volt electricity. By understanding this I can prioritize and manage my consumption. 2) Like kayaker said I can prolong my batteries by keeping the duty cycle from consuming below 70 % of the battery's charge.
