Dyeing Interior Cushions

I found a cheap solution for my ugly dinette cushions. I am going to dye them.

Today I tried dyeing a set of Volvo seats that came out of my niece's wrecked 240. They were the wrong color dark blue and I needed black. I did not want to reupholster them because of the cost, and then I'd need to do the back seats to match--the cost seems too high for an old car like my 240 wagon.

After watching Youtube, I was decided to try it. And I did the whole job in half a day, much of that was running out for the dye and returning for the next set transferred from another store.

So now I think I'll order some green dye and dye my dinette upholstery a dark green, and see how that works.

Pictures Follow.

I went ahead and dyed my while interior except for the door panels which will take a bit more work. It makes the material feel a bit rougher but will supposedly break in. There is a bit of odor from the out gassing. I have been leaving the car open on hot days. It needs a bit more time.

I also read that latex house paint works well when used with fabric medium (reduces stiffness I the material) and allows more color choices. I may try that on my dinette seats.
