Extrior Vents Covers

Hey anyone, I am wondering what I should use between the outside vent covers and the body of my Boler? I took the covers off to paint them, and not sure what to use to seal the vents to the body. The original stuff looks like plumbers putty??

Any thoughts?

Cheers!
Dave

Hi Dave,

The best type of sealant, I think all would agree, is Butyl tape, which can be purchased online (we got ours via Vintage trailer supply) or at an RV supply store. Maybe someone can chime in on where to find it locally. It is grey & looks like the plumbers putty tape but contains butyl which helps it to remain flexible & doesn't dry out in quite the same way.

Butyl putty tape. Sticky stuff. When it squeezes out use a plastic knife to cut the excess. Plastic won't score the gel coat unlike metal will. If done properly you won't need to bloob caulk around the outside either.

Any auto window install shop will carry it. The old cars use to use it to hold in windshields.

I think you are thinking of butyl caulk. Butyl tape is a putty.

Thanks again everyone.
So is butyl caulk different from the tape?

The operative word being "good". I ended up at an RV supply.
