How much scrubbing to get that ensolite clean?

I'm working on restoring a '75 Trillium 1300 that looks like it was neglected for a couple of decades. After two days of scrubbing the ensolite with good ol' fashion elbow grease and bleach (after trying every other chemical), my arm finally gave out (and the ceiling still didn't look clean). I thought that there had to be a better way to get all the dirt out of the millions of tiny little grooves in the ensolite, so I did a google search, and lo and behold, there is a better way!

I was skeptical at first, but was willing to spend the $20 at Rite Aid to try it out (you can also get different version at Walmart, but it didn't have the brush attachments I wanted...Walmart has a 2 pack online for $24 with the brushes I wanted, but I didn't want to wait to get it). It worked as adversized and made what I had already cleaned look dirty...so I redid it with this little guy.


If i'd only found this two days earlier ...anyway, the ensolite is now clean...on to the next task...

I have no idea what a Sonic Scrubber is, but I'm going to get one! I like the ensolite but cleaning it is a pain. Anything that will help me clean it more easily is worth the money. Thanks for the tip!!

I don't have one, but I do like Black & Decker's other tools. I have two electric drills I have had for over 30 years and they still run great. A couple of years ago, I bought a B&D cordless drill and I like that too. It runs a long time on a charge. If I were to buy a scrubber, it would be B&D.

Just out of curiousity has anyone tried TSP on ensolite? I used in a house I bought, in a room where the fellow had smoked for 20 years. The walls ran yellow through 3 washings, then came clean. No scrubbing, just using a sponge wetted with the TSP and water; rinsed; then re-wash until the surface is clean.
Thoughts on ensolite and TSP?

Thanks for the tip, I am on my way to get the pro detailer version now. The difference is amazing, can I ask what chemical/cleaner/solution you used with the Sonic Scrubber to achieve these results?

Hi Rodre,

I tried a bunch of different cleaners, but I had the best results with a mixture of TSP and bleach. I used the TSP that says it didn't need to be rinsed off, but it feels like i left a bit of a residue (although you can't see it). I will go back and wipe all the walls down again with bleach once I get done with the rest of the restoration.

It took me a lot of time, but the results were very good.

I used warm soapy water and Clorox Cleanup and a scrub brush.
