So,this ensolite stuff you all are talking about,is that what the insulation is in my camper?Mine is in really good shape but the previous owner started filling in the seams trying to get a more solid look.I cant get the sealer off without damaging the insulation so if it is paintable that would be great.

About the Screen room----We had hoped to put it right up against the camper, but that particular camping site was a hard surface, so we had to put it where we could stake it. It worked out fine, tho. The screen room is a wonderful addition.

But to make things even easier---I am in the process of making a new awning. I got a very heavy duty tan tarp, and put the rope that slides into the awning rail on one end. The tarp has grommets every 24 inches. I am going to make a decorative edging from outdoor material to go around the edge of the tarp. I have netting (with grommets all around) that I can attach to the tarp for some bug control. I also bought nylon material to make privacy panels. It will be like a mini attached screen room (6' x 8'.)

Awning welt

Vickie -

That sounds like a neat project. I'd like to see a detail of how you attached the rope. As an alternative, I've seen "awning welt" advertised on the web. You might try that if you haven't already come up with your solution.

Rick

Hi Rick---

Here goes:

First, I cut off one 6' side of grommets (so I'd have a plain edge to turn over my rope.) I snipped off a bit of rope from my original awning so I'd know what size to get and went to Lowes and bought some rope.

Then it was a simple matter of placing the rope across the top of the tarp, turning the edge over the rope, and sewing close to the rope (using a zipper foot on the sewing machine which allows you to get in close to the rope.

Learn from my mistakes---I didn't need to get quite as close to the rope as I was trying to get! Made it a slow go when I'd run into the rope with the needle!

The biggest mistake was out-thinking my self and using a heavy corded type thread. My machine HATED this thread and it took ONE HOUR to sew 6 feet, and lots of sweat and prayers!!! This made the opposite side of the stitching a horrible mess (see pic). It works fine and it won't show---but it still ticks me off.

When I got through, I put in a regular spool of thread and went back over the stitching several times (which took a whole 10 mins!)

And, yes, we took it to the camper and tried it in the rail and it works great!!

Just for fun, here are the rest of the pieces to the awning.

The striped material will be like an "edging" hanging down a foot or less from the tarp edge. I will cut it into three sides and put grommets on it matching the grommets on the tarp. I am going to connect it to the tarp with carbiner type hooks, or S hooks, so it's very simple and all breaks down easily.

I'm running the stripes horizontally cuz I think that's a more modern take on the vintage awnings.

And these pictures show the nylon ripstop fabric I will use for the 3 privacy panels (also with grommets on the top to be attached to the same hook as the striped material.)

And the netting which is actually supposed to be for a double car garage opening I got at Ace Hardware on clearance (I got 2). It has those lovable grommets at the top!) AND metal poles at the bottom for weighting it down.

I will also use some tie down stakes for the netting and privacy panels.

How an axle is not supposed to look

Here's a pic of my existing axle. It's supposed to be 22 degrees downward, but it looks like it's about that far upward. My new one is on order from Northern Tool, and we're supposed to go camping this weekend. Hope it arrives in time.

How she sits now

You can see the interior color here on the door. It's fairly loud, but the idea is, "beach camper." And kids' playhouse in the off season. Wash'n wear. The floor is just primed here but the final coat is really just a darker shade of grey. Trying to keep it easy to clean. Definitely more spartan than many of the interiors I've seen here. We'll see what direction we take down the road, when the roof leaks are fixed, for instance. No sense putting in carpeting now.

Anyone still out there?

Huevo went into hibernation for a while, but has re-emerged as a project.

A couple of updates:

- That Northern Tool axle didn't fit, so Huevo is still a low-rider.
- The crummy paint job applied by the PO is peeling off, so I'm going at it with Rustoleum aluminum paint to attempt a faux-Airstream look.

I'll post pictures when able.

Oh, and I went back and looked at that camp kitchen in the link above. Awesome!

v/r,

Rick
