LOL. Hey, i'm trying to get my post count over 100

I was inside a Casita two weeks ago in the Costco parking lot here on the Oregon Coast and whatever they had inside there 2007 casita looked very close to what raz & i have linked to. I have no idea what "Rat Fur" is. Sure doesn't sound like a Nautical name, though they did have rats aboard back in the day.

THIS is rat fur and it's on many if not most Scamp walls.

Tan Headliner Wall Fabric (Per Sq. Yd.)

It's fuzzy, not carpet, has no strong backing and thus can be stretched.

Odors are an issue, but so it dust. I want to take my 13' to burning man, which is basically like camping on packed talcum powder. it's super fine and gets everywhere, there is no stopping it. There are white out dust storms of it. That would get so far into rat fur and NEVER come out entirely.

So I'm still looking for that ideal, wipe-able wall covering.

O.K., Campers, listen up!

I actually found a wholesaler for this stuff, they use "hulliner and headliner" interchangeably for the same product, and here's a statement from their website:

Note - Supply of this item has been limited. Due to the slow RV and Boat industry, the mill is not running this item very often.

Emphasis mine...

Sounds to me like they're exactly the same thing...unless of course "rat fur" turns out to be something entirely different, perhaps made out of actual rats or something.

Anyway, I'm smack dab in the middle of lining my Scamp 13 with ensolite type foam, and will then cover it with marine grade off-white vinyl. I'm moving slow, but should have some pics soon.

RAT FUR = Head Liner/Hull Liner
Who knows why the stuff ever got the slang of "Rat Fur", but we can now just send peeps to the various online (or local like i found mine) fabric shops selling Hull Liner.

The difference in looks would be the choice between
"Geometric" with lots of little squares or diamonds in pattern
OR
"Stratos" sort of smooth like a "rats fur"

That Stratos stuff looks and sounds a lot like Scamp's "rat fur".

Hull Liner seems more like a generic name than a specific brand or material.

Ensolite sounds really great, but I think it's very expensive compared to reflectix for a given level of insulation. Even thin ensolite is expensive as I recall.

If the ensolite referred to is the same as used in my Trillium and insulative value is your main concern: I can tell you that inch for inch you'll get better insulation from Reflectix covered with just about anything you choose.

The only reason I haven't changed mine out is because I haven't figured out anything as washable and attractive as the (original) ensolite.

The ensolite I have handled was quite thin and expensive. They do make much thicker varieties, but it's pretty dense and heavy, those properties are not ideal for heat insulation. And the thick stuff must cost more. Ensolite is supposedly fantastic sound insulation. So a layer on the hull under other insulation like reflectix may dampen the noise of your environment.

The reflectix+fabric is good at sound insulation as you hint/ponder above. We usually camp within ~100 feet of a raging river when gold panning. During the day the sound is comfortably deafening during the evening inside the van it is so quiet we usually open the roof vent and crack all opening windows just to get some white noise to sleep by.

My understanding is that Ensolite is not such a good insulator. Also, it is heavy. I went to look at a Trillium that had the Ensolite sagging quite badly from the roof. Now it may be that as I lifted back up to the fibreglass some of the weight I felt was resistance to flexing.
I found some good pricing on Neoprene and thought that if you rolled on a vinyl coating, it would be a lot like Ensolite. I never gave it a try though.
If rat fur is made from rats, then the elephant people aren't going to be happy about elephant skin.

Two layers of reflextix and a layer of rat fur are not bad a sound deadening. Pretty impressive actually considering the total weight and thickness. But since I'm currently in a semi-urban environment near a major freeway hub, I do hear more traffic than I'd like. Single pane windows are not helping that issue. That's another topic all together, been meaning to ask if anyone had replaced standard Hehr windows with double pane.

Dylan, on single pane windows and sound...as you know my reference to sound insulation is inside our van conversion with stock automotive windows on front cab, two in curb side slider (closest to the river) and the two in rear doors. We put up a double layer of reflectix in each window at night for night shades and to help with insulation (sound/temp).

On Hehr windows. Elsewhere i mentioned we have them (double pane) throughout our 38ft 5'ver. Herr will make replacements for your existing Hehr single pane windows (expensive!) but we really appreciate ours in all seasons.

Thom, You are right Parkliner does use Hulliner as their wall/ceiling covering. I love what you did in your van, and would like to do the same in a Dodge Sprinter Van some day. By the way thanks to Francesca for that wholesaler link, you never know when you might want some of this stuff.

I think the benefit to ensolite is in ease of manufacture. You get insulation from condensation and a wall covering in one application. As far as reflectix, Scamp claims R-15. There was a rather heated debate on that a while back. At the time I knew nothing about reflectix. I bought some this fall to make window coverings for those below zero days we get. According to the manufacturer, covering both sides doesn't seem get you much in terms of R value.

Escape doesn't use rat fur.

Rats in Canada? Alberta is the only Canadian Province that prohibits rats (4-legged ones, there are many 2-legged ones walking around).
