Our latest projects:

1. We got tired of pulling cables out of the hatch of the Uhaul. There were two since the PO had added an AC. We added a 30 amp plug port inside of the hatch. Since it was all cracked up, I reinforced the whole back side with fiberglass cloth. Eliminated the water filler port since I never plan on drinking any stored water

2. Stained all wooden storage lids. Made new straps to keep them in place.

3. Replaced the sink drain and water lines

4. Added an in-wall heater below the closest. Idea stolen from these forums

5. Re-finished all hinges

6. Replaced tons of screws with stainless steel

7. added a plug with built in USB ports

8. Took out both ash trays

9. Make a spare tire cover

10. Made a shelf system for the closest.

These projects all started because I just wanted the closet organized! Lol and ironically, I did the shelf last. Just finished it tonight.


Things to do.....
1. Make drawstring bags to hold cord
2. Construct and install a clothesline system using flag pole holders and PVC
3. Find a new tongue jack with wheel
4. Buy new tires
5. Install a tongue box
6. Paint over the PO's bad decision of painting a name over the front and back windows
9. Make a spare " little" table that can be used so people can actually squeeze into the seats
10. Add magnet latches to the cabinet doors because I'm tired of messing with the original inferior hardware!


If anyone has any suggestions... Feel free.

I Pulled the cord, Out my 13.5 Big Foot, cut into 2 pieces with, about 6 inches coming out of storage compartment. I went overboard and bought a 50 amp Male and Female connector. I keep the long cord piece rolled and put under a table bed seating compartment. very conventional

Here's a few ideas & opinions. 1) Tongue Jack- ours had been replaced with one from Tractor Supply that fit on the original mount. It has the side crank and wheel. Worked OK until I put on the tongue box, then I had to grind off the welds that held the jack tube to the mount bracket, turn the tube about 45 degrees and weld it back because the crank handle hit the box. 2) cabinet latches - what type do you have, the metal turn ones on the face of the cabinets, or the push ones on the edge. And do you have the liners in the cabinets. Our upper cabinets and the lower under the sink had none, apparently because we have an early model that had the liners added later, and the push latches won't work with the liners. Closet has the push to open latch. So none of these would stay shut when traveling so I use a wood dowel slid through two eye bolts to hold the upper cabinets shut, and a plain old hook & eye on the closet. Under sink door has one of those phlipit latches. I don't think the magnetic catches will work good traveling, especially on the upper cabinets. 3) tongue box - it has worked good for us. All our propane has been removed, tank bracket cut down to a couple inches above the tongue, mount for box is something I made, welded together, and bolted on. Photos in our album. What did you put in place of the ash trays.

I have liners and push latches. Terrible

I was thinking of using the rare Earth magnets. Might be too strong though.

I put a blank switch cover over one of the ashtray holes and I installed the plug in the other.

I just cheated and hung a picture over the holes left after removing the thermostat from the wall.

Can anyone tell me why I need a smoke detector in a 13 foot trailer? If that detector goes off, I'm probably on fire! Lol

Brandi if you do a Google search of this site you will find a number of threads in regards to latches I also probable would avoid using the magnet type closers. Things will move around inside the cabinets and bang up against the doors so you may find a lot of stuff on the floor of the trailer.

One of the threads that has some other options to consider is Cabinet & Drawer latches

If you check out a Marine hardware you will find some pretty nice looking options but be warned the prices can get up there.

I picked the magnet closure because it's the only one I could find where the hardware would not show on the outside. Not too worried about anything falling out because I put tension rod spacers in there to prevent that from happening. Plus the stuff stored in there is light. Paper plates etc

Right now by doors all gape open. I just want them closed. Maybe I'll look at new push button style ones. I think they should have some type of striker plate. Mine are expected to work with just a chunk of the liner cut out. Not the best plan.

Brandi; Smoke detector; we have one because we use an electric heater that could potentially short out or fail somehow. It is very sensitive and will go off if we use a toaster in the trailer. The later Uhauls used a turn latch with a flat piece on the back that went into a slot in the cabinet liners. Part of the problem with attaching anything to the doors is they are hollow. Can you post a picture of what you have.

Another item to add to your list is a new CO detector. Most are only have a 4 year or so shelf life.

No need for a CO detector. I have removed all gas appliances.

More than one person in my time here has had their family saved due to having a smoke detector in their trailer. Stuff can happen when you are sleeping, just like it can in your home - electrical shorts, battery shorts...... detector will hopefully go off as a result of the fumes, doesnt require a full blown fire to trigger it.

Nice work Brandi; did you make the tire cover for your spare? Just for suggestion, you can purchase a blank round board for small table at Lowes, if I remember correctly they came in either 18" or 24"; I used the 18" and just finished it to my liking.

those hubcaps are very rare, supposedly Uhaul policy was to remove them to make lug nut inspection easier. Most likely they were all thrown away. I've seen only one Uhaul that still had them.

Mine are pretty dented. Apparently many people did not know that you should use a rubber mallet to put them on!
