LED taillight conversion - Cheap!

I have been looking into converting my 1986 16" scamp tail lights to LED and the prices are pretty high.
I decided to check into modifying the old lamps to LED without spending as much money.
I bought two Harbor Freight LED taillights that are made to mount in a hole with a round rubber gasket.
Here is the one I chose.

I cut off the extension of the plug so that is will fit after the wires are soldered to the pins. The lamp and the rubber ring just fit into the old lens.

You can see where I sawed off the plastic extension and the rubber mounting ring.
Here is the lamp placed in the lens and I think that a little silicone sealer will hold the Harbor Freight led lamp in place and keep water from getting between the old lens and the new insert.

I have more pictures, but I cant see how to upload more than the three to an album.
The two layers of red plastic don't seem to dim the light very much and they seem to be brighter then the original.

You will have to add a LED lamp for the tag holder as well, but I am also checking into this.

That is the exact modification I did on my Boler. They are very bright and it is great to keep the original "Top Hat" Reflect-O-Lite 110/150 lenses.

I left the connector and cut a rectangular opening to match through the tail light bucket. That way I could keep the modular connector.

I used 4" LED lights with 24 LEDs in each assembly
