Ah! I think you are right! Mystery solved! The box part actually has break away tabs like an electrical junction box. They are dispersed equally around the perimeter. Perhaps it is the base unit intended to be covered by the plastic once the fresh water pipe entrance location it set.

I am not a plumber and I don't even play one on TV.

The door will be newly skinned in Knotty Pine veneer. (As will the kitchen cabinets) I have found a ready and inexpensive retail source here.

Gina, I must admit I am very envious of your clever design. However I want to know what is on the inside of the door?? Warmed towel rack maybe?
