Mirror Question

I've just about decided to install a mirror on the outside of the bathroom door and have a question about installation.

I've seen the factory installed ones and they appear to be screwed on. They appear to be just like the lightweight ones I have seen at the linen stores. I was wondering, since the screws do not penetrate the door and the doors are thin, if they might use mirror adhesives as well. I could call the Casita factory, but was wondering if anyone has installed one themselves and what luck they have had with them bouncing down the highway after a DIY installation.

Also, the placement. I assume they are off-centered because of the handle placement. Is it placed as far left as possible, next to the caps on the hinges?

Does the added weight with two towel racks on the other side of the door have any long term ill-effects?

I'll take a stab at it.
First of all I wouldn't recommend any kind of adhesive, unless its made specifically for mirrors. Anything else wiuld eat away at the back of the mirror making it nasty looking.

I have 5/8 inch doors, and the mirror is mounted with those plastic mirror anchors, which is what I think you are talking about. Two on top two on the sides and two on the bottom. The mirror looks to be about 1/4 - 3/16 inch or so.
It's been up for 21 years and hasn't fallen yet.
Now if you doors are too thin or just fiberglass then you might want to add some sort of wood back plate or strips where the screws go.

pj - I was referring to mirror adhesive. Actually, I don't want to use that black goopy stuff that is used on large mirror applications, but have seen the mounting tape for mirrors. Alone, it wouldn't work with all the bouncing when traveling and heat flucuation during storage, but wondering if it would be 'helpful.' The mirrors on the Casitas that I have seen (don't know about all) are screwed on directly thru the wooden frame.

I think if you have the screws going into wood then there should be no problem. Even without the adhesive.
Unless of course we're talking full length super heavy mirror.
Mine is about 1 foot wide by 3 ft long.

That's what my door currently is 5/8 inch particle board.
But I have been eyeing up this Alpine clear pine shelving I keep seeing at Menard's. I have used this for the screen door sides I built and am thinking what neat doors these would be.
White fiberglass and clear Pine doors - the IKEA look!
Sigh, next year maybe.:zz

suz,check out the 1 foot x 4 foot plastic mirrows (5$)at k-mart,remove frame and use double back tape to adhere to door or inside the bathroom next to sink, mine has been on for 2 years,the mirrow is flexable enough to fit the contour of the shower stall walls. will send pictures as soon as i can remove from digital camera to e-mail.:reye2

Thanks for the ideas. Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you, but I have been out of pocket for a while. Will probably continue to be out for a bit longer, but hope to be back on track in a few weeks.
