Modify all original or keep vintage?

My guy and I are having a hard time deciding what/how much we want to do to out 1973 Play Pac super hitch hut.
How many of these are left? 10 on here right?
I think ours is the only 100% original one left.
We feel we have a responsibility. Although we can't quit pin down why or to who.
What is everyone's thoughts on this?

  1. Does the original design work for you?
  2. Is it a museum piece?
  3. Could the original interior be recreated if someone ever wanted to turn it into a museum piece?

Based on your registry photos, the answers to the 2nd and 3rd questions appear to be "no" and "yes," respectively. Only you know the answer to the 1st question, but I assume you wouldn't be asking unless it were "no."

My personal opinion is to take lots of pictures and then do what you want.

What makes it museum piece? I'm sure it's it the best condition of any part original camper. There is only the crazy wall paper thing going on. It's been in a barn since 1980 not used

Things like tear out the carpet, replace original good condition cushions, replace table, counters etc, put holes/drawers in. Paint, replace fridge/heater. Install sound

Use it for a year as is then see how you feel about it. Its yours you own it, it doesn't own you. Be the boss and make the decisions.

We have had it since 2011. This is the first time we thought of modifying it

Do what you feel and want. There is no financial advantage to either modifying or original (not like a 1964 Mustang) in fact is anything a fixed up will return a higher return, but we are not talking about selling.

I went through a similar decision on my Boler, but quickly I decided to modify it to the layout and improvements that worked for us, but also kept the vintage look. We love our Boler and have a lot of pride in what we have accomplished and the comments and compliments we get.

In short do what you want, do what you can do, do what you can afford. Make memories.

Look for sources of inspiration

Research google images/pinterest for DIY trailer redo(s) and see if anything strikes your fancy. You will see what you are drawn to over and over again. That will tell you what you really want to do.

Most of all have fun!

Hi Meghan,

Have you heard of ? Your trailer is very cute, what a lucky find.
You've owned it some years now, if you feel like re-decorating, go for it, I'd say.
Babs ? just re-did her trailer, it looks fabulous, great color scheme. I'm sure you'll see others that you love. Just wait a day and see if you still love it the next ;-)

I really don't think you need to feel that way. First, judging by your pictures, it is stock, but hardly show quality. It has some rough edges that diminish your enjoyment of the trailer. Second, the way the interior is built looks like it could be fairly easily restored to stock appearance later if someone really wanted to do that. It's not like you are hacking up irreplaceable fiberglass components for which there are no molds. Third, you can preserve the original appearance for posterity with a very thorough album of photographs. And fourth, I'm pretty sure the maker of this trailer would be most happy to see it being used and enjoyed. By you!

Keeping it original would not be hard, gently sand and varnish your woodwork, re-upholster the cushions and hang new curtains. Store the old ones, if you ever wanted to sell it, and someone is looking for original, you've got it already.
Really you should follow your heart and taste.
Good luck deciding, and happy traveling!

I think Ian said it best. I understand the thinking of keeping it stock but make it the way you need and want it. IF somebody wants to put one in a museum it can always be restored to original no matter what was done to it. Personally I would rather work with what was better for me than deal with what didn't. We are such a small spot in the RV industry/history that none of our molded trailers will being BIG bucks for being totally stock IMHO and tossing in my two cents.

make it your own! But go slow, so grateful for this site which prevented us from making mistakes. Use it as is for a while. When you do you may find that the sink is too small, that there are areas of totally wasted space for the way YOU use it and there are no great ways to really cook the way YOU want to. (OK, that is what WE found out for US!) We loved ours at first, but so excited about putting in that IKEA sink this week, and the way the old couch area will be our new kitchen....When you wake up in the morning in your egg you will start to figure out what is not working for you.

I saw this written on a Jeep forum.

"It's not your Jeep until you drill the first hole"

I'm not shy about drilling well thought out hole in my Casita.

I think it ain't no 1935 Bugatti. Feel no guilt in doing whatever it takes to make it functional & fun for the two of you.

I was in the same boat. Modify or keep original. Although vintage is cool, it didn't work for me. The bed was too small, I haven't slept on anything smaller than a queen size. So that's what I wanted. Evrything didn't work so I was gonna have to replace it all. Not happening. I'll never cook inside a little trailer in the middle of the summer. Too hot. I say go with your gut feeling.
