Has anyone had any experience in modifying older A/C units (w/o compressor starter circuit) to provide better start torque, and lower start current? I currently have a Duo-Therm 'Sunchaser' 13,000btu unit that is a bit of a grunt for a
generator to start, although it works just fine. Looking at the schematic, it has no compressor start capacitor, whereas the later 'Briskair' unit does. The run current for both units is the same, but apparently the 'Briskair' unit is much easier starting. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe most household refrigerators and freezers use a start capacitor in series with a timer relay for just this purpose. Any comments?
