Music in a Casita

:hap2
I am a new owner of a '98 Casita 13' which will be going out for its shake out trip next week.

I was wondering what others have done for music in the Casita.

Right now I will be using a portable boom box, but I would eventually like to install a small 12v stereo system.

What have some of you folks done for tunes?

Hi Mark! Good to see you here!

Hey, use the "search" button up in the top right corner of the webpage.

Enter the word "radio" and you'll get 7 pages of links to past threads ... many of which detail various installations of radios, antennas, etc.

Unlike many websites, the search engine on www.fiberglassrv.com is really, really fast ... and powerful.

Try it, you'll like it!

Mark, We put in a couple of (white) boat speakers, and a 12 volt, AF/FM tape deck, also designed for use on a boat. The radio has a line in so we can plug in the portable CD player.

All of it fits in our upper cabinets (speakers on the end, radio near the galley area; ours is a 17 ft. Liberty, so yours will be slightly different - I don't think you have the upper side cabinets).

Have a great time on your shakedown ''cruise!'' :sunny

Need that second cup of coffee

Thanks Charles!
I tried a search on "Music" and "Stereo" before I posted the question. Radio didn't pop into my head - I need that second cup of coffee to wake up.

BTW
All you folks are great! Thanks for posting so much useful information in one place.

Mark

Mark ... I put CD radio and then told the search engine to "match all terms" ... in other words, find the exact phrase.

Here's one of the past threads that popped up:

http://www.fiberglassrv.com/board/read.php?TID=1599

But there were many, many more.

As I said, the search engine really rocks. It's the best of any website I've ever seen.

Mark, totally off the subject, but I was born in San Diego, CA a long, long time ago. There weren't near as many people there back then! Still a beautiful place, however. I'm jealous!

Thanks again

It looks like I will have a new automotive or boat stereo installed before the shake out trip next week. :)
I like Mary's idea of using boat speakers - this sounds prudent.

Great link Charles. Seeing these photos takes all the fear out of modifying my egg.

Ah San Diego - America's Finest City. It is true; we are growing far too fast. We now have a traffic problem during the rush hour.

The only problem with living in San Diego is that it is hard to find a place to vacation that is more fun than home.

One of the reasons I bought the Casita is to be able to join my friends on the Silver Strand during holidays. They all pull their motor home dinosaurs down to the Strand for weekend camping parties. Party might be a little strong – a bunch of 50ish engineers don’t party that hearty any more, but it is fun none the less – and the beach is perfect.

It is a Self Contained Only beach, and I have been missing out as a tent camper.

I will now be able to join the party - and still be only minutes from home.

Satellite

Ollie and I have invested in a satellite ready car-type radio we had installed by our local car radio store. We used marine speakers. Now, we're getting ready to hook up the satellite antenna. You apparently need a metal relflector for the antenna, since we are all fiberglass. On the other hand, the antenna can be inside (probably in the back cupboard) since the waves can pass through the fiberglass. Then, we're thinking of getting solar power since we do a lot of dry camping and want to be sure to be able to play cd's etc. without draining our power.

Hi, Mary! Nice to see you here again!

I think these under the cabinet mounts are great - it even has a clock! Wish I could find one that's 12 volt. We'd rip the other one out in a heartbeat, to recover the storage area it consumes!

:o

Hi Mary F.

Mary F. sez: ''I think these under the cabinet mounts are great - it even has a clock! Wish I could find one that's 12 volt. We'd rip the other one out in a heartbeat, to recover the storage area it consumes!''

Hi, Mary F.
Here's your ''heartbeat:'' We felt the same way that you do about consuming cabinet storage. So when I purchased an am/fm/CD on our California run last year, I got a plastic enclosure which is specifically made to install car radios under the dash of cars that don't have the normal space for such--I imagine older cars, in particular. Had to go to the installation department at Best Buy to find that, but most audio installers would probably be able to supply one. Color choices: black or black (I could have spray painted it white, but what the hey!) Then I hung two KLH surface mount speakers--again because I didn't want to lose the cabinet space--and mid-range speakers are somewhat directional, although that probably isn't too important in a small trailer.

I purchased the same Sony radio (CDX-L300) that others have installed in the cabinets. It's reasonably priced and one great feature--(which no one else has mentioned as I recall)--by holding the off button for two seconds, you turn off the clock display, which virtually eliminates any power useage when you're ''not home.''

Mark sez: ''The only problem with living in San Diego is that it is hard to find a place to vacation that is more fun than home.''
Hey, Mark
That's why we come back to S.D. to vacation. Was responsible for building thousands of homes there, so that's why we had to leave town.;) That included those D.O.D. townhouses just about opposite the state park on the Silver Strand. Say hello to my old boss, Corky--one of the best builders in the U.S.! And we'll see you at San Elijo S.P. in July.

Great Idea

George,
That is a great idea. I just got this little egg - I am reluctant to start cutting holes in it.

I will take a look at the plastic enclosure at my local Best Buy.

It is nice to hear from former San Diego residents. San Elijo S.P. in July... I hadn't thought about San Elijo for a while - this little trailer will give me a new look at the local beaches and parks.

Thanks for the great ideas.
Mark

am/fm/cd

All the car radios now have a little remote control. Before you doze off ,keep your feet warm by hitting the off button. The 18" black rubber antennaes are break proof and bring in good signals. I added jacks for speakers #3&4 and have them on 12' wires so they hang on the awning posts. You may ask why? So as to cover the generator noise from turkeys that charge up all afterenoon so they can run their freezers(AC).

My stereo location

I thought about stereo locations for many weeks. I like a car CD deck, and wanted to use one I had.

The cabinet by the door had wasted space at the top so I cut the holes and put it there. Very happy.

Everyone inside can hear both speakers directly unlike if I had mounted them in top front or rear cabinets.

Although not as great of stereo seperation, It is comparable to a boom box that takes up table space.

This is totally out of the way<img src=http://www.fiberglassrv.com/board/uploads/3ede99f066867inside2front.jpg/>
