Need cushion foam, any ideas ?

My Trillium project has NO cushions.
I know the sizes but just need the foam !
I went to a foam supplier..... $500 !
I am thinking of buying clean used foam mattresses and hacking them up. Any other ideas ?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

thanks

You didn't say where this foam supplier is but I found online costs about double what I could get it for locally due to shipping. While we have and I used an upholstery supply about 20 minutes from home, I was told Joanne Fabrics also carries some, don't know what firmness's they stock. I had replaced our original foam with heavy duty for more support. Also surrounded it with batting stuck to the foam with upholstery spray contact adhesive. A bit of a struggle getting them back in the covers but they came out great. Even saving shipping, good grade foam isn't cheap. I think 4"x24"x48" of the HD was about $40 each, but I'm not sure as it was a few years ago.

Local fabric stores had foam, but I found buying foam mattresses from Ikea on Sale to be the best price.

I don't know where you're located. Your visable profile doesn't say.. but, have you checked wrecking yards? There may be conversion vans or motorhomes with intact interiors that you can buy the cushions cheaply. You can recut foam with an electric knife.

Foam can be cut with a serrated bread knife (or similar) and some elbow grease. We have a foam store here in San Rafael, California called the Foam Store of Marin Foamorder Store Locations. I have not worked with them so cannot recommend them. I think your idea of cutting up a foam mattress is a good one although I don't think I'd go for a used one. You never know what has seeped into the innards. When looking at foams online be sure to look up "upholstery foam" otherwise you might end up with "memory foam". You do not want to make cushions of memory foam but you might like to put a layer on top of your bed like I and many others do. I made a custom cover for my memory foam (a cut-up bed topper) out of the softest cotton jersey (available in bedsheets). The two sections roll up so they can be stashed under the seat.

I am in the Calgary area.
The foam supplier is local so there is
no shipping involved.
I have heard of these RV Wrecker Yards but have no idea where they are .
Does anyone know any in the Calgary area ?

I have picked up used foam mattresses and cut them up for many cushions - house and trailer. Before purchase sit on it to make sure it is good all over, the edges might feel good and then be soft in the middle where people tend to sleep. No mold or what looks like mold. If you cannot see the foam do not buy.
I use an exacto knife with a long blade to cut it and don't forget to wrap the foam in a light batting, it helps to fill out the cushion and hide small sewing mistakes.

For an RV wrecker, I go to the Pick n Pull on Barlow and Glenmore. Not usually any cushions though. $25 for a fridge.
For foam, I would pick up an Ikea foam mattress and cut it up.
Two of these would work, for less then half what you were quoted:
MOSHULT Foam mattress - Twin - IKEA

And you would have lots of foam left over.

I have bought foam mattresses from ikea from their "as is" section real cheap. My bed at home was a kingsize 10" latex memory foam got it for under $300 cut it to my queen sized bedframe with a serrated knife.

I have no idea of where there is anyone specific in the Calgary area but you can try an upholstery shop or if there are any close by a canvas marine shop.

Expect to pay about twice what any of our American friends tell you they paid for foam.

Your only other choice is to take a long weekend and head stateside for a cross border shopping trip. I save up all my 'too much to buy in Canada' wants and do one big trip so that the price of my gas and any camping fees are built in to the savings. Now that we have $800. each duty free allowance after 48 hours it can make for a really big shopping trip. Don't forget when you're calculating the savings to take into account the savings on sales tax.

As David said - Look at foam mattresses at IKEA, they are reasonably prices and use layers of foam density.

I was quoted $300 from a local foam supplier in NS - they said they figured a double mattress would do it and that includes cutting. They will make the covers for $300 if we supply the fabric. I'm betting there's better deals out there but we may go this route for the quality. Trillium or Scamp will come in at around $1000

Keep in mind foam breaks down after a while, used may be too used.

Fabricville has an indoor/outdoor fabric for about 12/meter- I'm guessing 12 meters unless anyone here knows how much for the main bed and the bunks

I wonder if a business that does upholstery would have ends or slightly damaged pieces of foam
