Trailer: 1970 Trails West Campster

I'm not sure how to start, but I found this site and thanks to Lynne's referral I just bought a 1970 Campster. The previous owner gutted the trailer, frame off restoration. Lengthened the frame 2', installed a battery box, metal storage box and double tanks on the tongue. Frame strenghtened, new 3/4" floor, vinyl, cabinets, all new wood, paint, resealed windows, new wiring and plumbing, countertops, etc. I'm pretty happy about it. Here are some pictures the previous owner took.
Oh, I'm calling it the "Clam Shack", since I bought it to take to the beach to go razor clamming.

Thats a nice looking unit. I had a Compact J. It was almost the same as yours. Good camping.

That's VERY nice. Do you know what it weighs now? I really like the more open look with the kitchen wall down.

WOW, that sure is a nice looking trailer.
You'll get lots of ooos and ahhhs when you attend fiberglass gatherings, like the NOG in September, or Oregon Gathering in July.

I might have to invite myself to stop by and see it when I'm in Washington in the summer. Cory's Compact is in Olympia, too.

No Bobbie, I don't know what it weighs. I will stop at a scale when I get a chance. I think it is nice being more open. I'm not sure if the wall provided structural support, but it does make them seem a little claustophobic.

That's a great looking little trailer! I'm glad to hear that my posting led to your finding this little gem.
If you come to one of the fiberglass gatherings -- the Spring NOG event or the July Oregon Gathering in Bandon -- I'll stop by to say hi and see it in person.

That's a pretty big spare tire. Is it for the tow vehicle?

DEFINITELY a nice looking rig, I'm really impressed by the clean lines and quality look of the drawers and cabinets. Is that a refrigerator though, or an icebox? Just curious...
And I LOVE the name for our crowd Tom, the Square Eggs, Excellent! hehe

How is it on tight turns or backing into tight spaces?
The box overhang is quite big, even with the xtension. Does it negate the overhang?

G Scott,
I love your trailer! I love the exterior color too with the contrast of the canary yellow canvas pop-up center!
Heck with the skirt. Take the other one off, and you are set. I love Trillium's by FAR... that ain't no LIE, but your campster is very retro KOOL!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome, and congrats on acquiring your wonderful "square egg". Hope you'll plan to attend the 2008 Oregon Gathering at Bullard's Beach State Park in July ... to show off the "Clam Shack"
We wish you safe travels and many, many happy memories (and lotsa clams!). Perhaps our paths will cross down the road. Take care - L 'n D

Just got back from trying out the campster this weekend at the beach. Thanks for all the welcomes and comments in my absense. I'll try to answer your questions...
Frederick- The spare is the same size as the trailer tires, except a passenger rated tire instead of trailer tire. I think it's just the photo and the black wheel, but it may be a little bigger. The tires are 205/75-14s.
Joseph - It has an icebox. Yes, the guy did nice work.
Gina - It towed and parked just fine. The longer the tongue the easier the backing. The storage box is a little narrower width than the trailer, even with the spare. It probably would hit the tow vehicle if I jacknifed hard enough. There is a wooden battery box behind the metal box. So if the tongue was extended 2', and I have 2.5' of storage boxes now, I have maybe 6" less clearance than original?
Dave - It was painted an almond color. As far as the skirt goes, they are both off at this point. I have the one, just thought it would be nice to have two...
I am thinking of attending the Oregon meeting at Bullard's Beach. We'll see how that goes.
Thanks for the warm welcome!
Scott
