Thought I'd post this because I see these "multi purpose" battery boxes are coming down some in price... Link to one site

I bought one four or five years ago and really like it, mostly for the built-in 12v plugs. Real handy for airing up the trailer tires when hitched since my little portable 12v compressor won't reach that far back from the dashport. Also good for other 12v uses...plus, the external posts let me hook the battery directly to a charger without having to open the box.

I will say that the "monitor" quit working after the first couple of years, but I usually use a simple reader that plugs into the 12v socket anyway.

That would be good for connecting jumper cables or portable solar panels without the sparks getting near the battery vents. You just wouldn't want to get any metal near those terminals, like propane bottles. You could pop rivet a rubber flap over the positive terminal.

Both terminals have rubber coated wingnuts on them that in my case have lasted well in the weather. I also have mine mounted so that the terminals face out and away from any potential contact with the tank/hardware.

I bought one of these last year from Cabelas. The external wing nut connectors are still fine and I like them for a quick solar panel connection. The two 12v outlets and the tester have all failed. They are not marine quality. The plug caps that were supposed to keep water out of the 12v outlets didn't stay shut while driving and rain water pooled inside causing them to rust out. I was told that the MinnKota version is better quality.

I bought mine from Cabela's too, Ken....I'm surprised to hear that your 12v outlets failed. My outlet still works after five years- cap stays shut no problem.

I forgot to mention that I've also used the external posts to hook up a portable battery pack. It's one of those "jump starters" that I keep charged up in the car.

Holds enough power to get me a couple more days of light if on an extended boondocker that runs the trailer battery out.

Francesca, Nice to know yours is holding up better than mine. I suspect the wind popped mine open as the position of my battery (Scamp) is different than yours and both caps faced forward.

I didn't want to give up on the convenience of an exterior 12v outlet so I installed another one that has a tighter cap. The other rusty outlet is caulked shut for now.
