Protection from Burns on gravity furnace?

Has anyone got a nice solution to prevent toddler (or clumsy adults) from bumping into the furnace while it is really hot?

I just got a 1975 Trillium with a Duotherm gravity furnace. It works great, but is extremely hot, and also very close to the bed.

I have been thinking of a wooden grill that only covers the top half, but I am wondering if someone has already figured this out?
