The first mod that I've started is a folding table. I'm glad to have the front bathroom model. However, without the front settee, it's not easy to just plonk down on the seat when you have to squeeze by the table. So my idea was to make a folding table so that when it wasn't needed for eating half of it could be folded up to make the seats "easy access".

1. undershot of table showing full extension drawer slides that support the outer half of the table top

2. table in the "easy access" position. Probably for snacks etc. it'll just get used as is.

3. full extension slides out to support outer half of table

4. full table in use in "up" position

Thought I'd better try it all out before doing the finishing work.

It all seems to work fine, outer table is quite firm, and goes from half to whole in a couple of seconds.

Good idea, those factory tables are just long enough to keep you from getting to the seat and just short enough to mess with your sleep.

I rounded the ends and stained and varnished my folding table. I hadn't previously tried it out with the upholstry in place. Tiny question of if the added height would cause the tops of the legs to contact the drawer slides etc. No problem at all, lots of clearance.

One mod done Brakes are ordered and on their way. Hopefully I'll be able to keep crossing stuff off my list without adding new items.

Two questions:
1. Have you set it up as a bed and tried and yet?

2. It looks like the clearance between the sink cabinet and table is considerably less than the original. So the question is have you tried using the table with it fully extended?

I had thought about doing something like this. My thought was to shorten the table a bit to make it easier to get in and out. Then have a separate piece to fill in when using as a bed. I would make the additional piece so the gaps where the bench corners are, are filled to make a more solid bed platform. Right now I have a couple pieces of 1/6" plywood that sit on top and fill the gaps.

I made a completely new table using 3/4 oak plywood. My wife didn't want me to cut up the original top just in case it didn't work out So now I have both a folding table and a non folding table.

I made it the same size as the original table. The two pieces are almost exactly equal sized except the outer part is 1/2" shorter to allow for clearance near the back wall. Equal size probably would have worked but a little clearance is OK too.

For someone wanting a folding table I don't see any problem cutting the factory table into two pieces.

The only other item not covered in my previous write-up is the leg. It is relocated to the fixed part, close to the hinge. In this location it is too long to fold up without hitting the back wall. So I cut it, and use the cut off piece with a sleeve to attach it. No hardware required.

Actually I didn't mind making a new table top because particle board is so heavy, so I won't be hauling it with me. I'm a fan of the Colin Chapman "add lightness" theory of building.

Bryon, yes we've set it up as a bed, no changes there except there's more support for the outer edge of the foam. Yes, there is a slight reduction in access to the port side of the table. That was by design with a greater emphasis put on more mattress support. The table will never be set with a banquet for six so it's no problem to lift the outer part slightly and slide in. Based on our years of using a cockpit table on our boat I'd be surprised if we ever use the full table, no problem either way.
