Roof top tent on fiberglass trailer?

Anyone ever put one of those roof top tents onto their Scamp, Casita etc?
The 4 of us squeeze into our 16' Fiber Stream but maybe I could put the kids up on the roof?
Thanks
K

I love it. Stand by for loads of structural banter. Make sure you post up some deployed tent pics if you do it.

Seems like a lot of weight to put on a molded trailer. Why not a tent on top of your tow vehicle, though? They make some nice clamshell ones that mount on the car-top carrier.

Many FGRV's don't have roofs strong enough to support a 65 lb a/c unit.

When I had my ct-13 we did the car top tent for me. My wife, daughter and her friend slept in the camper. The model I bought is big foot rooftop tent I got the one that is almost the same size as a full size bed.

I have a roof top tent on my Land Rover that I usually use n my solo trips. When I take a friend along we deploy the roof tent for them while I sleep in the trailer.

I am thrifty and I was considering purchasing one of the rooftop tents some time ago but abandoned the idea. They were, for us, very pricey so I had done some research and came across an article for a DIY one. I goggled today and found this one: DIY Rooftop Camper Made From The Simplest Of Materials which I thought was interesting and not costing very much compared to ready-made. This website is pretty good if you are interested in DIY projects.

Could you point me to an RV AC unit which weigh 65 lb only?

Thank You Kathy P. That looks to be about as close as current production gets.

The 65 lb figure I used was for the 7800BTU Duo-Therm (?) unit we used to put on top of 18' Sunrader FGRV Mini-Motorhomes. I think that's accurate because I could lift and slide one on top by myself.

I wish manufacturers offer light weigh low profile <10K BTU AC units. 13.5K BTU unit looks ugly and is overkill on top of travel trailer below 25' length.

They actually do and I came across this one when looking at weights but this one weighs in at more than the lightweight one I referenced above although still considered "light-weight": The Coleman Polar Cub 9200 Air Conditioner | Mello Mike's Overland Adventures

WOW, and it's on sale (online only) right now from Camping World for $301.43. Not much more than a window air conditioner.

Cathy, thanks for posting this. It's very innovative. Makes me think.

That ad has been running for several weeks, it's for a now discontinued model and CW apparently is out of stock. About 20 peeps on the Toyota Campers site must have contacted every CW on the planet and came up with one. It's now sold.

And I might add that most roof top tents weigh a little over 100 lbs. Mine weighs in at around 125#. There are some lighter weight fabric tents but I think around 85 lbs is the lightest I've seen. Once you load up a couple of people in there the total roof weight can exceed 400 lbs easily.

Used roof tents come up for sale on Expedition Portal fairly regularly so you might try watching the for sale section of that site.
