Scamp 19 full remodel with lots of pictures

We bought a nice little 1986 Scamp 19' and it is our first fiberglass camper. We are planning on living in it for the next 6 months. We decided since we are staying at a park that has very nice restrooms and showers that we don't need the bathroom. We also decided it would be nice to have a larger fridge. Our original plan was to simply remove the bathroom and install a larger fridge.

Once we got started we decided to go a little further and take out the carpet, paint the walls, and do some basic upgrades. Of course one thing leads to another and pretty soon we found ourselves doing a full remodel.

Here are some shots of the original interior. Overall it was in ok condition but very dated.

And the project starts.

1. Job supervisor.

2. The toilet comes out.

3. Next, time to remove the old fridge and heater.

4. The age really shows once we start removing things.

1. Rear benches come out.

2. What a mess!

3. Next the closet and sink cabinets are gone.

4. Overall it was messy, but there is very little water damage and the original wood floors are in good shape.

1. We patched the holes left by the rivets with West Systems epoxy and microballon filler.

2. The first coat of primer goes in. I also replaced all wiring and lights. Low profile LED tail lights are in the back and the running lights are wired up.

3. Still deciding what to do with propane lines.

4. Time to start chopping off the wood floor overhangs.

1. Test fitting new cabinets from Home Depot.

2. Allure flooring also from Home Depot. This stuff is great, very easy to work with.

3. Walls to house the new refrigerator where the old closet was.

4. We are very lucky to have a family member offer up some shop space with every tool imaginable at our disposal.

1. New upper cabinets held in place for fitting.

2. Test fitting the new counter tops and corner supports.

3. We are using a on demand tankless water heater and venting it out where the fridge used to sit.

4. Starting to come together...

3. Still lots of work to do. The tankless waterheater on the counter will be mounted under the sink. We are also going to install a shower head that can be passed out the window and used as an outdoor shower.

4. We had the stove top powerdercoated to match the counter tops.

2. The "bedroom" is almost finished, we just need to figure out how to trim out the back edges of the flooring.

Looking good, I'm curious to see how it turns out. I've considered some more changes in mine, including a larger fridge, but keeping the bathroom.

Wow, really nice. If you are not using the thru the hull screws, how are you attaching cabinet items to the exterior walls/ceiling to keep them in place?

We plugged the original holes left behind by the rivets, and we are using stainless steal screws with washers that have nylon seals to mount the new cabinets.

Did you salvage anything? I have the same 5th = 84. Someone stripped out some stuff in it - shower faucets, hose, some of the toilet parts. Both ceiling vents were grabbed and torn out by the wind.. The hinges are there but thats about it. Did you save the hot water heater or any doors, knobs? anything.. Im trying to put this one back together and dont have the funds to even dare call scamp. This camper was pretty abused, but If im paitient and take my time I hope to find all the stuff that should be in it and have it be orig or close. Thank you

We did save some stuff but for the most part the big items like heater and water heater were so badly rusted that I wouldn't trust them or want to sell them. Also I think the shipping to Michigan would be a little high.

Personally I wouldn't rebuild with original Scamp parts unless you really want it to be all original. We sourced most of our new interior from Home Depot and Lowes. It's a little heavier now but worth the quality of the cabinets and counter tops. My V6 Tacoma still has no problem pulling it (with airbag helpers).

Our Scamp 19' 5th wheel has a bolt on hitch adapter that makes it into a bumper pull. It's the perfect place to store a big storage tub and generator and allows us to keep the camper shell on our little Tacoma. I installed some airbags ($250) to level out the ride.

Rum Runner - Where would i get a hitch adapter? How much to they run? I like that set up

Id be happy wit 2 handles that match for the cub bored doors, and a shower unit. Any small things like that you salvage and want to sell?

The hitch adapter is custom made. It bolts on so it can be removed in case I want to go back to 5th wheel mode. It wouldn't cost too much to fabricate but it might be hard to find someone who has experience with trailers and who is willing to take on the liability of making something like this.

Sorry we already had to move into the Scamp so we had to get rid of everything that was removed.

Thanks! I can't wait to get some more time this week to get the sink and the rest of the flooring installed.
