shower p-trap and valvectomy

Broke the P-trap off the Casita shower drain last weekend while backing up onto an elevated pad site. Darn thing hung about 6" below the frame rails. I got a Hepvo valve and replaced the debris catcher with something that sits up above the frame rails. Hopefully no more busted shower drains.

All I needed was the valve, 1 1/2 PVC to drain adapter and a "Flanged Tailpiece". I just cut the flange off so I had drain pipe on each end and simply stick it and tightened the nuts.

This is a 10 minute job once you have the pieces together.

Cut out the valve, leaving enough PVC for the drain adapter.

Deflanging the flanged tailpiece (cut the flange off so it became a drain pipe on both ends)

Needed the flexible tail piece to make this angle

Done in 10 minutes.

Good Pixs. I hope to do this on mine from the Get-Go. Larry from LHC had suggested it to me and to put one on the sink as long as I am at it.

Does Casita still make them with this low hanging pipe?

Yep.

There's a whole thread about it on CasitaForum and Larry talks about the boxes of the P traps he'd take to gatherings for folks to have if they needed extras. After hauling them back and forth... they now go into the recycle box and so do the hose clamps. Nobody wants them.

I don't know why the factory doesn't do them differently. I'd guess this setup is probably cheaper than the original with the valve and probably a lot faster to install.

Question

Am I missing something here? The shower drain doesn't need the trap that Casita installs?
You don't get gray tank odor in the shower after doing this?

The Hepvo valve functionally replaces the P-trap... right, Casita people?

Information is good. Lack of information is not so good, but misinformation is much worse. Check facts, and apply common sense liberally.

It's a newfangled P-trap replacement:
Hepvo Waterless Valve

It works... Better than than the P-trap. When I pulled this apart, the water in the p-trap could have gagged a maggot. Of course we haven't ever used the shower so there is no telling how long what ever was in there had been there (back wash from the gray tank I suppose).. With the Hepvo valve there shouldn't be as much standing water. Just a better mouse trap in my way of thinking and really simple to replace.

From the pictures Arlon it almost looks like you are installing it sideways or parallel to the tank? In my mind I would think that there would or should be a gravitational force so that the water needs to travel down. From a galley sink its a no brainer but from a side discharge something has to open that bladder port. You say it works great and I too am going to have to go the same route as yours.
My egg didnt have a sink in it or if it was then it was removed;however, I see no evidence of a drain for it on mine and I dont have any reference material to go on yet for my build. On your last bottom picture where is the Tee pipe going up to.

The T pipe is the vent going up and the sink drain is tapped into that vent pipe inside the closet.

I'm not sure how it's going to behave when the grey tank gets completely full. I guess it will still function as the water in the drain tube above the tank level is going to seek equilibrium. The way I see it, the valve could be below the tank and it would still function but be more a std P trap that is going to hold a little water inside the tube but because of the valve it won't let nasty water from the tank back into the shower like the regular trap will. Once it's through the Hepvo valve it isn't coming back.

Once the tank is full, it simply going to act like a stopper. No back sloshing on road no matter how full the grey tank is.

Very interesting. I wonder if Casita made a shower without a sink installed? I have the closet totally torn out and there is no vent going up. That is what was surprising to me and why I think I had massive water invasion onto the OSB floor. The drain on mine went right out and exited to a garden hose male connector on the side of the egg. So in essence my grey tank was about a two foot section of 1/2 pipe and that was it. I would have seen evidence of sink rivets had there been one. Now I have a better idea of how to proceed.
thanks

I had a Hepvo in our Casita. It always worked perfectly, even though we froze it at least once. The morning it was frozen, the shower water backed up for just a couple minutes, then it thawed the valve and all was good. Surprisingly, mounting the valve in a horizontal position is okay per the factory literature and it worked just fine.

Nice modification Arlon. I may be wrong on this, but I think you need to rotate the HepVO 180° so that the bottom is smooth (hump on top). This will allow full evacuation of waste water. As shown in your picture, you have a shallow water "trap".

Hadn't noticed that. Thanks, easy fix.
