What did they do?

Well I got the ac removed now I'm trying to figure out what they did to the roof to mount it.

That looks like a standard 14"X14" opening which has been reinforced to support the A/C. The unit is held in place by 4 spring loaded bolts which compress a gasket.

Here are a couple of videos about installing an A/C unit on campers , the principle should be the same on yours...

I have installed literally hundreds of rooftop ac units but this looks like they filled in the escape hatch and mounted the ac to it

Good eye! That makes perfect sense, considering many "escape" hatches use a 14"X22"opening.

Isn't the bigger issue whether the roof is reinforced for the weight of a rooftop AC? Your profile doesn't say what year or model Scamp this is...

It's a 91 Scamp 13 but I'm not going to put the ac back up there. What I'm thinking about is making a nice cover to seal the top and get install a fantastic fan in the opening. Surprisingly the roof is very solid in that area I was actually on top of it with the ac last night.
