Where do you buy rat fur?

I'm going to attempt sewing on a patch of rat fur where the bunk hump was sawed off. Anyone purchased surplus brown rat fur?

Hot melt works well for smallish areas, and "drys" fast making installation easy.

Okay, I'm weird... I'm one of those people who thinks if something isn't perfect it can be an eye-sore and would drive me nutz. Soooo, instead of trying to blend something that always says "look I'm a patch," I often make that area stand out. Have you considered using contrasting fabric to your upholstery? Or, maybe something like bamboo? Make it obvious like you "intended" it to be that way. YMMV

Come to think of it the heat from desert sun without AC might remelt and cause release. Northern campers have less worry.

You have to trap the rats and skin off the pelts, then sew them together and...
just kidding!

3M Adhesive 90 Spray has worked well for me in glueing rat fur to fiberglass.

I was thinking I would send the cat out to gather me a mess o' rat. But that would take too long and the pelts would have teeth and chew marks.

My thoughts exactly.

If you are looking for white rat fur, you may want to try these guys. Outbred rats - Sprague Dawley® Outbred Rat

Not exactly the same situation but, when I built my teardrop trailer in 2006, I used industrial grade hot melt adhesive to attach the 'rope trim' inside the trailer cabin. I'd found some leftover 3/8" 'stars 'n stripes' decorative rope at our local Tractor Supply for a bargain price. Since it fit our decorative scheme I bought the entire roll & used it instead of upholstry 'ribbing' or wood/plastic decorative trim. With my hot melt gun it went on easily & has held well; NO sags or other evidence of glue failure. It's been almost 8yrs, more'n 21K miles, & the temperature here in Arkansas frequently exceeds 100 degrees with high humidity. We've also spent considerable time in the desert southwest with no failure of the HMA. Unless subjected to a considerable, continuous load, I can't imagine an industrial strength HMA ever failing due to heat, especially in a FGT.

I wouldn't expect a true hot melt adhesive to melt in the heat (because it really takes a considerable amount of heat to melt it), but the "low temp" craft variety almost certainly would.. I've had junk the kids made at school fall apart just sitting in my car for a few days.

I would call Scamp and ask them what they use. Pretty sure they use a spray adhesive.

The issue I see with using a hot melt glue is your not going to be able to evenly cover the walls or the back of the rat fur resulting in pockets of rat fur with no glue, This can/will in a bumpy looking finish. Keep in mind the walls are not flat so you will probable notice any imperfections in the smoothness of the rat fur a lot more than you would on a flat side wall.

Donna,

Did you have a chance to look at my posted pics of the damage spot? If so, do you have any cool suggestions that I might use to repair this spot?

I think you two might have stumbled upon the best example of the difference between a parent and a grand-parent that I have ever seen.

Badger,

What? One lets the kid sleep on the floor and the other one wants to make a special place for them? Actually, I think the kid would like the floor so I'm not sure where I fall....... :-)
