Yellow Outdoor Light

I would like to convert the existing exterior light on our scamp to be yellow instead of white. This is decrease the number of bugs attracted to our door area.

Has anyone else tried to move to a yellow light? What method have you used?

Thanks in advance

Paul

Just change the lense to a yellow lense Cost about $5

Got a orange bulb to replace ours. Still gives light but less bugs for sure.

Just to be contrary, I had a yellow bulb. Didn't notice any difference in bugs.
I did notice that it was so dim that I needed a flashlight to find the trailer.
I switched it out to white so that the steps were illuminated.

Change the bulb to an LED. It's my understanding (and I've been known to be wrong) that the LED lights don't attract bugs. Then you can keep your clear or white lens.

That theory has been corrected.

It is true that most LED lights do not produce a significant amount of UV light. But, while the spectrum of light produced by LEDs can vary from light to light, it turns out that most do produce a significant amount of blue light. Blue light, it turns out, also attracts bugs.Aug 17, 2011

Thanks Glenn. I'll be testing this sometime in the summer. So far, whatever LEDs ETI installs seem to be working as they haven't attracted bugs. Time will tell.

I've got LEDs inside and camping at Kane Lakes last year I thought I had an electrical issue because of the loud hum I was hearing. Had my head leaning against the wall next to the screened window. Realized what I was hearing was thousands of mosquitoes swarming at the window.
We left for Vancouver in the morning.

I suspect that it is human odors that attract the mosquitoes, and that the light just enables you to see them.
Turn the light off - no mosquitoes.

I've heard that mosquitoes are attracted to heat, not light. Can't remember exactly where I heard it... FWIW. I think it was a report on someone inventing a bug zapper based on heat rather than light.

Easiest, least expensive, and best solution. No expensive LED, and really does not reduce amount of light much. However, it is questionable how much difference it will make towards not attracting insects.

WOW, I didn't expect my query to spur such great discussion. Thanks everyone very much.

My intent is to convert the entire scamp to get LEDs this spring, but I don't know if that will help with bugs or not. It's worth more research though. To see if one can be found that doesn't attract bugs.

Where are folks finding the yellow light covers? Most places only seem to sell the clear/white ones.

As someone who has spent most of their time in MN/WI, I can definitely agree that mosquitoes don't care about light. They equally offend when it's completely dark =)

Mosquitos are attraced to carbon dioxide, your breath or vehicle exhaust

On the LED issue I have LEDs in my Boler and NO BUGS are attracted to it. open the car door and have the interior lights in it go on and it fills with mosquitoes, flys, etc, but leave the LED lights on in the Boler and no problem. Must be the color spectrum given off by the LED bulbs.

There must be more to mosquitoes than carbon dioxide . My wife and I can sit outside at night and she is being eaten alive by mosquitoes and I am being barely touched . I have seen this same scenario happen over and over again. with different groups of people and different genders. It always made me wonder why?

Camping World. Ask if you can't find them.

Yellow Light?

Sure, go to a yellow LED with a cluster of LEDs
The incandescent bulbs, if too hot, can melt the cover lens.

I have an amber cover on my porch light AND an LED. I've noticed a considerable reduction in bugs being attracted to them but they still are. My conclusion is the "off" switch is the ONLY true way to eliminate most of'em. Mosquitos are in a category ALL their own. If you're around pine trees...you're GOING to have mosquitos...just to name one source.
