bush pies

I just bought a couple of those long handled bush pie makers to replace the ones an adult kid borrowed 'for the weekend 'early last year and didn't return.
A whole year without them was too long.
Time to think about fillings again - we do pizza ones quite often, plain cheese ones, canned pie filling is enjoyed by the grandkids but not us oldies. What else is there? Do you have favourite fillings for these campfire munchies?

Bush Pies? I know what you're referring to but I didn't realize there were regional name differences. We've always known them as Pudgie Pies, due I believe to the name embossed the cover.

The first one to came to mind was Reubens. Corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing - Good Stuff!.

Pumpernickel or Rye bread if you want to get fancy.

Hazel,

Have you ever seen the Pie Iron Cook Book published by Rome. (The company that makes the cast iron pie irons).

I saw it at Cabela's last time I was there.

You can go to Rome's website where they have many recipes posted. Easy To Make Pie Iron Recipes Just Google "pie iron" on the Internet. You can also search previous FGRV posts in the "Search" tab on this forum. Drop down to the Google search and put in the words "pie iron". Have fun! BTW I find the wheel well space under the closet door in the Scamp is a perfect place to store my pie iron. I made a long drawstring bag out of black cloth to store it and to keep soot out of the trailer.

Guess I'll have to get my hands on the cookbooks ASAP. My irons are exactly the ones shown - Rome. The store had a different brand in aluminum for less money. I chose the Rome cast iron because I find cast iron stuff superior. Also they come apart at the hinge and the cheaper ones didn't. We found it was safer for us all when the grandkids were making their own pies if they weren't battling with the extra length!

I bought the Cast Iron ones, after the Aluminum ones that I bought in 1968 melted in a camp fire.

Rome has two cookbooks now. There is another group that is on YouTube and Facebook and has a cookbook called Pudgie Revolution.

My favourite fillings are Reuben sandwich ingredients or roasted veggies and feta. The veggies I like to combine are eggplant, red peppers and red onions put on a ciabatta bun with PC Sweet with Heat mustard and a slice of feta.

The first one I saw was in about 1965. At a State Park Campground in Ohio. A guy was selling one that he made in his home metal shop.

Ha!, you are to low! I'm a truely old git, thinking that the time may soon be upon me that I can't get to the loft of the Scamp, or down into our sports cars.

I had never seen a triple pie iron until I saw this retro display at the Taupo Museum in New Zealand.

Gilda, I have not seen a triple either when looking for them. We just bought a little single round one. I wouldn't want to hold the weight of a triple!

Bush Pies

I was told years ago when I inquired as to why are these called Pudgie Pies? If you eat enough of them, you will get Pudgie. Always felt that is how I got so Pudgie over the years. Must say, they are addictive.
