Crock Pot Bread
We've decided to take our small Crock Pot with us on our 9 month loop of the USA. We were interested in a bakepacker but have discovered that a crock pot can maake bread. Has anyone ever tried it?
These are across a couple of articles by people who use their crock pots to bake bread.

Thanks for the links, I will have to try it. I have made a cake in a crock pot (boredom, brings out the adventurist in me!) It came out ok but not like a cake.
My Mom loves kitchen gadgets ( ) and I hate them ( ), but recently she purchased a Crock pot that brown's! Actually browns meat! I love it! No more browning the meat then putting it in the crock pot. It's a Wolf Gang Puck Crock Pot from I think HSN (home shopping network) A little large but if you have the room for it, I totally recommend it....... I think I will have to try the bread in that one, so I get that crispy crust.

I made "Couldn't Be Easier Slow Cooker Bread" today and it is a dense moist loaf. I used a l.6 liter round Corningware French White casserole which fit in my 5 qt. slow cooker. The water seems to steam the bread and it did not have a crispy crust, but the flavor was good. And what is not to like about warm bread with real butter! I found another recipe to try next: Honey Wheat Bread IV Recipe - Allrecipes.com which does not mention adding water to the slow cooker.

Yesterday I made the Honey Wheat Bread IV recipe and it was much better texture and taste than the first recipe. Does not use water in the slow cooker, but the bread was moist. Now I am looking for a recipe for white bread baked in the slow cooker.

ok, tried the Honey Wheat Bread IV recipe in a 3.5 Qt crock pot. Turned out a little over done for that size. Crisp crust. But inside was fine and tasted great. I will take it out at 2.5 hours next time instead of the 3 hours cook time. It was fun.

White Bread for the Crock Pot.
1 pk. active dry yeast (2-1/4 tsp.)
1 tsp. sugar
1/4 c. lukewarm water
1 c. warm water
1 tsp. salt
1/4 c. sugar
1 egg
1/4 c. vegetable oil
3-1/2 to 4 c. flour
Dissolve yeast and 1 tsp. sugar in 1/4 cup warm water. Allow to stand until it bubbles and foams. Add egg, oil, lukewarm water, salt, 1/4 cup sugar and 2 cups of the flour. Mix well. Stir in remaining flour until it dough pulls from bowl sides. Place in a well-greased Bread 'n Bake cake pan and cover. Place in Crock Pot. Cover and bake on High setting for 2-3 hours or until edges are browned. Remove pan and uncover. Let stand 5 minutes. Remove from pan.
This recipe was in an old Rival crock pot cookbook. If you want to use your crockpot for baked goods, I recommend the accessory pan and the cookbook. It contains recipes for things like sourdough bread, a variety of quick bread style bread, New York style cheesecake, baked puddings, cakes, even brownies. Terry R.

We use a Rival crock pot we bought in 1997 for making bread and cakes. It has an lightweight metal insert called a "Bread 'n Cake Bake Pan". It works great and actually makes bread faster than a dedicated bread making machine. I'll post recipes if anyone is interested.

Crock Pot Muffin Mix
We bought a grocery blueberry muffin mix, added milk and a sliced banana. Buttered the crock pot, poured in the batter, put it on high and put the cover on.
It works.

Oh that looks yummy! How long did you cook it for? Did you vent the moisture from the lid to keep it from getting soggy?

I did not vent it and it did not get soggy. I did take it out a little early. I simply put it bottom side down in a frying pan to finish it off.
We did not time it but I guess an hour.
I simply put a plate over the top of the crock pot and turned it over to get it out.
I will tell you two hours later it's all gone.

Great recipe ideas Norm.
Question: How large is your small Crock Pot?

Crock Pot
Our Crock pot is the cylyndrical type. The inside vessel is about 5" across and 5" deep, possibly 2 quarts. I suspect it's about the smallest size you can buy.
We recently made a pot roast, 2#s of meat, 3 carrots, two potatoes, an onion and 2 cans of beef broth plus spices.
Hope that helps.

very cool. i intend to get a small c/p. nice to have . you cna go bike ride, or fish ,or explore,,,and come home to a nice dinner waiting for you.
another thing i have left over from my days driving interstate truck, a 12 volt lunchbox looking thing. it gets up to 300 degrees. a lot like a slow cooker. i pack my dinner in it and plug it in about three hours from my destination. when i get there i ring the dinner bell and eat.
