Those filters have been getting a little harder to find over the years, but you can still find them, just not everyplace and not very prominent. I think I have picked them up at Kroger the last couple of times. Which may not apply to Manitoba
A couple of drips of water to wet the paper filter after putting in the basket gets the paper "stuck" to the bottom of the basket which seems to do a better job of keeping the grounds from getting under the filter when filling.
Taking the basket of grounds out once the coffee is done perking will prevent steam condensation from pulling a lot of extra "bitter" from the grounds. Especially if keeping warm by the fire or reheating. But I often use our 1qt thermos to keep the rest of the pot warm for later. We have it for travel anyway...
