solar cooker projects

Introduction to solar cooking | Solar Cooking | Fandom powered by Wikia

Build a solar cooker! There are lots of DIY designs in the link above that are very low cost and easy to make from basic materials.

A fun way to keep kids and adults involved with science projects while out camping. Be sure to take along equipment for collecting data on the results of your projects such as thermometers and heat sensors.

I tried this once with a roast of beef. It did cook but the meat was rare. I don't think I would try this with port or chicken.

Good call...I agree

with the availability ease of use with propane stoves why would you do it?

Scamp, I used a dark metal roaster in a large cardboard box lined with aluminium foil, shiny side towards the roaster to reflect heat towards all sides of the roaster. I put a large piece of glass from an old window, that I cleaned with Windex before hand to trap the heat inside the box. The temperature inside the box went to 300 F. I started at 11:00am, put the roaster in at 11:30 and left it there for 3 hours without opening it. I cooked a 3 1/2 lb sirloin tip piece of beef. The outside was well cooked but lots of color at the center. Very juicy and tender and tasty if you like meat that way.
Takes a lot of time, a fair bit of prep and of course lots of clear blue sky. I prefer cooking over an open fire, much faster and can be done regardless of the weather.
Cheers,

You missed the point of the posting

Science can be fun and this is a low cost project for having some fun with science while out camping.

I never once mentioned that it was intended to be a replacement for the gas cooker in a trailer.
