I'm very sorry to hear that this contagion has jumped species, from gnomes to flamingos, though I suppose it had to happen sometime.

We must just hope it is an isolated incident and not the work of a terrorist organisation such as the Front de Libération des Nains de Gardin in France (Garden Gnome Liberation Front) or the even more terrifying Malag (Movimento Autonomo per la Liberazione delle Anime da Giardino) in Italy .

Now see, you call it 'protecting' but those gnomes might call it 'smothering'.

Some stolen (or is that 'liberated'?) gnomes end up sending their former owners (or is that 'jailers'?) postcards of themselves living the high life in exotic locations - are you sure you want to deny them that opportunity?

Just askin'...

I seem to recall hearing about a school class who sent their garden gnome (or maybe it was a teddy bear?) on holiday with someone. The idea was the person with the 'baby' would take a photo of it somewhere and send the kids a copy by email along with some interesting info aout the location. A note was then attached to the 'baby' inviting someone else to take it somewhere for another photoshoot.

I think the 'baby' had a very long journey and posed for photos in many locations on all the continents except Antarctica.

Just place a little C-4 in one with a detonator that operates if taken too far away from the home.
