We use t-shirts in our language program
I have a t-shirt with TAKTANI
people ask *What's that say?*
and the wearer says *I don't know.*
other person, *You don't Know?*
Wearer,*Yes, I don't know?*
other person says *You don't know? How can you wear something you don't know what it means?*
Wearer says, *Yes I do, It means !I Don;'t Know!*

This conversation can go on for a while it your good at acting, being the wearer. It's fun.

Jana;
What language is that?
I see a lot of deaf sayings on shirts down here at Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) but need graphics to put them on the web. And there are an incredible number of cross cultural cross language jokes. One friend of mine even has a deaf stand up act that is largely based on language misuse/misunderstanding.

>>deaf

Charlie .. this has nothing to do with nothing ... but my son's fiance's sister was Miss Deaf Illinois 2002.

My son has become fluent in sign language ... but when I'm with her, I have to write notes back and forth. Feel real incompetent.

I would love to see that stand up act. would be very entertaining I bet.
My daughter, for a coubpe of months, while waiting to move, had time on her hands and learned sign. she found some books, and practiced with a 7 year old. It looks good to me, not that I know it. I found a CD that your suppose to know Sign when you get through their lesson. if you want to learn, I could send you the name.

The language on the shirt is Lenape of the Delaware Indian. first tribe to sign a treaty with the US. friends with William Tell. for a fast history lesson. Think we are doing a shirt with *What?* on it next. that has good possabilities.

Jana-

It's William Penn. As in Penn's Woods. William Tell was the guy with the crossbow. I don't think he made it over here.

Charles:
I started learning sign when I was 40 a basic amount can be learned from books and watching tapes, but classes are everywhere and normally cheep, like $35 for 6 weeks once or twice a week. You will have enough to actually convey most simple ideas very quickly. And every deaf person you meet will be very happy to help you to improve. I just try to add a new expression every few days so I don't over load. It's fun to "talk" across the room full of people to my kids, or car to car on the road. I am currently teaching my mother some sign as her hearing is going out now, and sign as a conversational assist is a great help.
I use my sign almost daily, I am a realtor and sell a lot in the deaf community and with that much practice it improves or you get very acustomed to being embarrised.

Jana: I actually know a little Lenape, I was in the Boy Scouts Order of the Arrow and kept that association up well into my 30's working with the scouts as a volunteer on occasion.
I am also a ham operator and know and use morse code.
I guess I am just a communications junkey.
We all have a very small world here, I kind of like that.
