Tread separation today

I was out working, towing my Hauley and making deliveries. At one point I felt an odd tapping sensation. It took me a couple of minutes to figure out what the problem was. Yep, my tread separated.

Nope, not on the trailer tires.

Nope, not on the truck tires.

Headslap! Shoe Goo and you're good to go...

True story. Navy shipmate and I were in Hong Kong (70s) when this happened to one of his shoes. Stopped at a street shoeshine stall and asked for a repair. The Chinese guy whipped out an adhesive like Shoe Goo, applied it, and told my shipment to stand still while it cured. At least ONE HOUR.

Rest of us decided to go have a beer at our usual bar. 20 mins later my shipmate strolls in on one shoe, squeezing the other in his hand, puts it under the leg of his bar stool for compression, and says he got thirsty....

They were an old pair, were never particularly comfy, and I'm not that desperate. I'll save the shoelace in case I have a use for it.

Just by coincidence, I'd bought a new pair just yesterday.

In my opinion, governments should mandate a safety system, say a flashing red light on the top of the toecap of the shoe, when such a dangerous failure is imminent. You could have been thrown into oncoming pedestrians and possibly burst into flames.

Just goes to show they don't make them like they used to. Nothing like this ever happened to a pair of my PF Flyers or Keds.


We had to wear those out the old fashion way, lots of running around in dirt, with some dragging the feet when the bike brake pads were wet. Tree climbing and mud were both good for some wear and tear. You were failing as a kid if the whole thing was not falling apart before the tread wore through.

While chatting with my boss, I asked if could ask him a personal question. When he said okay, I asked him how old he was. After he told me, I told him that I had shoes older than that. Maybe that is why I don't work there any more, hmmmm. *




* - I don't work anywhere anymore - I'm retired. Don't know how I ever found time to work.

I suggest you purchase your shoes and other things from L.L. Bean. Their "satisfaction guarantee" for anything, any time, for any reason cannot be beat!

I had the whole sole (not L.L. Bean brand) fall off my boot while hiking on a volcano! That was quite a predicament to deal with!

Nah, I could never buy shoes without first trying them on. Picky about comfort.
